I'm a 1670 in online and only around 1390 in blitz, lower in bullet and standard (but partly because I never play standard). What I think is the main cause is that people like me have major trouble with fast games and lose with blunders, but we're still good enough to play a good game once in a while. Thus, in blitz low rated players are better players who make more mistakes in time pressure, which might cause the difference. Just my experience.

I've been playing chess.com for years now. I played 3 day chess, and my 'online rating' has steadily risen to 1640. I played 15/10 chess games and my so called 'standard rating' ended up fluctuating between 1450 and 1600. Then, I changed the timer and tried 10 minute chess with 4 extra seconds. Everyone I seem to play is much stronger and my 'blitz rating' is a pathetic 1280. I get beaten by players with ratings of around less than 1200, which NEVER happens in the other time settings! Is it just my imagination, or are the ratings much, much lower in blitz? There seem to be players with ratings of 1180 that have a very good knowledge of openings and very solid positional play. Is that normal? It is weird, because the moment I turn the timer back up to 15 minutes I can beat the 1400-1500 players quite easily. Perhaps my brain freezes a little bit when there is less time, but that really cant explain why there is such a sharp change in difficult level.
