The curious case of 1200: The Expert's rating

I have been playing for 6 years and have hit 2061 USCF recently. IMO, the biggest barrier is for a 1900 to get to 2000 (USCF Expert)

Yes 1900 is probably a bigger barrier. But I was talking about the dividing line between amateur and expert, which is 1200.

but you don't become a chess expert when you're only 1200, the same way you don't become a science expert when you learn how to conduct a fair experiment. The chess expert mark would probably be 1600s or even 1800s.

Intuition and pattern recognition is mainly used in blitz, which in turn isn't regarded as serious chess. Serious chess include logic and precise calculation, and a precise reading of material, time, space and piece activity. I can't imagine someone writing that Botvinnik and Alekhine (to name different chess approaching) relied on pattern recognition to become world champions (few books, no databases back then), and both wrote openly against using intuition. Even Lasker wrote: "When you see a good move, look for a better one".

Most 1200s aren't aware of any of this and hardly, if ever, have the chance –or need– to make serious analytical work. I fail to see how can they be acknowledged as experts in the game.

Yeah. Now close this thread.

Expert is 2000, club player (amateur) is 1500+, everything under that is strictly patzer, if even that.

One can argue that 1400-1500 is no longer 'strictly' patzer. You do see already the beginning of legitimate chess thinking in their play - and they are already way above the 'pure' casual player.

Sorry about that mangled reply, Kindle is not the best platform for this stuff, obviously :\

I have actually be persuaded on this topic. I think it should work like OTB chess, players should not start with any rating. It shouldn't be 1000, 1200, or 0, it should be unrated, because that's what they are. Provisional ratings could be produced by results and then after 20 or so games you wouldn't be unrated anymore.

What's most interesting is that my rating of 1173 puts me around the 71st percentile. So obviously 1200 is probably around the 75th percentile. Shouldn't chess.com picking a starting value that's closer to the median?

Yes, I wish they would, and not the ridiculous 1800, which is close to the 98th percentile or something for some categories.

1800? Have they changed the starting point from 1200 to 1800 now!?

You can start at 1800 if you wish.

I think it would be cool though if whenever you made your account, your ratings were given as 50th percentile for each group, whatever that number is at the moment you make your account.

I can proudly say that I have joined the club! I have reached the coveted 1200! I hope I can maintain this newly acquired expert status for many years to come. Thank you everybody for the support. With this achievement checked off, it's time to continue my Chess training. Next stop, FM.

Congatulations Vlad. Are you going to concentrate on playing still or maybe get into coaching?

Coaching is something I want to get into in the future. However, my schedule is booked full right now. Juggling chess writing, my chess club, AND the pursuit of a GM title has my hands full.

Yes, of course - and there's also the time you need to spend posting on the forums here.
