My grandparents were German. That's not angry. That's how they exchanged recipes and talked about the weather.

I didn't say Germans are angrier than other populations, that's just the title of the video. The satire was not directed to germans either, rather to hardcore gamers who do not control their emotions.

Actually, I'm an idiot, a video does have tone so the example isn't applicable.

Well said Nwap111.   I would guess that most of the commenters here do not play over the board USCF rated events or for the internationals, FIDE events.   I look at a players title to infer his skill level since ratings, especially today since they changed the equations to force faster movement both up and down, since ratings can fluctuate so much and ratings are no indication at all for the rapidly improving player.   You may have a 1200 rating but 1800 skill; in time you'll be 1800, but until then, the 1500 players seeing your rating at 1200 will be dismayed at your skill when they lose.   Ratings are intended to stabilize and do over time, but if they're not stable, then they are only useful for pairing purposes.

"The 1200 Hump" Beautifully written Vlad. Real or not, it gave us <1200 rated plebs a feeling of existence cry.png

Those who are above 2000 are considered experts ;above 2200 ,they  are considered as masters; above 2500, they are considered as grand masters

If you study some opening theory and positional ideas, there is no reason to make the 1200 a big hump to get over. IMO getting your first title (CM) is a pretty big thing.

The 1200 hump, as it is commonly referred to in Chess, is the sport's greatest obstacle.

Achieving this rating is the equivalent of graduating from an Ivy league School. No, it does not yet mean that you have mastered this pastime of intuition and pattern recognition. It does on the other hand suggest that you are well on your way to achieve such accomplishments.

In other words by attaining the rating of 1200, you can claim the title of being a Chess expert, and deservedly so. The mark of 1200 separates the casuals from the serious. It is the dividing line between the average and the exemplary.

I write this today because I want to address Chess.com's peculiar approach to rating new users. Many of you know that upon opening a Chess.com account, one is immediately gifted the rating of 1200. This means that every new user is recognized as an expert. Of course most of these users end up going below the 1200 mark and lose the title almost immediately, after all they are beginners and not used to such high level Chess. Does anybody know why Chess.com has chosen 1200 as a starting point? After all it's not just an arbitrary number.

In OTB chess, anyone below 1250 is a beginner, below 1500 is an amateur, below 2000 is truly good at the game, below 2200 is probably a titled player, 2400 and above are probably IMs and GMs.

note: at 1199 I am better than 68.5% of the players on chess.com (Rapid). I freely admit that I not very good, compared to higher rated players, but most of us seem to be want-a-be's.

Sometimes we need to explain jokes here, so that people understand them.

Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog.

Understanding is improved, but the frog dies.

The average rating seems to be falling on Rapid. It’s currently 1017. Compare also my percentile at 1255 compared to last year at 1400. Yes I’m still slightly poorer now by percentile but not by enough to explain a 140-point drop.

GGuessMyName

The day I'll reach 1200 in blitz I'll be proud of myself.

However 1200 players are clearly not experts and still have a long way to go.

1200, finally!

I am a very poor player.  I can't seem to beat level 5 on the computer.  Does anyone have advice on how to improve?

BoltCutter

I am a 1200 player, I am prone to blunders, I am sketchy on endgames (although improving) and my openings are limited but I have some pattern memory for them. That I am on the edge of understanding some finer elements of the game is the best I can say for myself. I am not a beginner but I am not "good", either. In that respect I feel I am at some sort of transition point.. although not certain to bust through it.

Is that a fair description of a 1200 player from a 1200 player? Lol

yes @boltcutter

You need to find an opening with white that you are very comfortable with and same with black against e4.

Do a few thousands tactics and spend a few hours learning about end game if you didn't already.

Watch these 27 videos to know all you need to get to 1400:

And think on Every move and you will be able to beat 90% of all those players under 1250 on this site before 2021.

And you will still feel the same but at least you will know who you could now beat "easily".
