I think Fine was listening to Sinatra records while writing BCE and just couldn't contain himself. Kids.

waffllemaster

lol at giving a capture four exclaims :)

Brian Wall (a Colorado master) is very liberal with his use of exclaims as well, although he does it on purpose for fun.

Being a better player does not make you smarter than your opponent.  You are just better at chess than they are for the moment? As far as ethics go, being able to use diversions or setting up ruses for your opponents to bait on, is just another glorious tactic in setting up strategy.  You are anticipating a particular move based upon the move or moves you've set up.

Ethics rely more on the basic principles of fair play.  Confusing of duping an opponent is clearly fair play. Again I just want to stipulate on the illregular timing of the game clock that constantly adjust back and forth on a fixed timed game!!!

Don't forget the ever-popular, !!1!

It'd be great fun to see a more liberal use of annotations.  For example, upon examining Fischer's notes you find

" 4.Qxf7# p0wned n00b "

Can I ask how you drew the conclusion that I thought I was smarter than weaker players? I've read my post severals times to try to figure out how you got that and I just don't see it.

I never meant to imply that since it's very obviously not true.

Road_kill

swolf81, I do not see the implication of intelligence in your statement only the skill level of your opponent. My level of play often changes with the beverages I chose to consume, the mental stress level of the day or the physical reserves I have remaining when I sit down to play.

Ethics ?  Who's talking about Ethics ?? Is there another ???

brian,i read ur note.u r a prolific wirter.in the main i agree with u.cheating is bad.i don't resort to it either and i want to ask the server to punish the cheater when he is found.as for your problem with time, which at times seems to be unfair to you,i have had the same frustration with my clock.it seemed to me that someone is deliberately manipulating it.i have.in fact, lost a number of games because of this problem.i can't,however, tell if the player on the other side of the board is cheating or not.i give him the benefit of the doubt.i wish there is a practical solution to minimize if not entirely solve this problem.

ciao.

I simply cannot stop laughing when I think about a guy who would write something like...

and then suddenly talk about a serious theme like "The Ethics of Chess".

lol

I can appeciate the constructive critisism of Noir_Desir in suggesting proper paragraph ascertation, However, it is the writer right to use expression as one sees fit to emphasize a point of thought in doing so.

Certainly an astute person as yourself can appreciate freedom of expression.  I since that you were listening to the grammar instead of the message and perhaps you might reflect on the content of the message as well. Integrity goes well beyond looking at the small minded things and searching for the big picture.

I am sorry, but misapplication of freedom of speech is something that irks me a little.  It is often used as justification for the content or defense against criticism.  All freedom of speech is is protection from the government punishing you for things you say.  It does not make everything you say correct.  You don't get to make up your own language or grammar.  The people who critique you are entitled to the same freedoms you have.  Sure you won't go to jail for your errors, but if you don't conform agreed upon methods of communication and people decide reading your posts are not worth the effort, it is really your fault, not theirs.

I seem to be losing time when I am playing opponents. I move rapidly and still it seems that my opponents have more time.

It is hard to think of an activity which would be as boring as using a machine to come up with moves during a game of chess. I really think this is the fact which really keeps this action to a minimun. I think it is more common that a player here will accuse someone of cheating because they can't admit to themselves they they lost fairly. Out of over 3,000 games i have played here i have only accused one player of cheating. When i looked at his archives he had over 30 games in a row which he won. So i would suggest anyone who think he has been cheated on in this way look at the opponent's other games and see if there seems to be a real patten of nothing but wins.

I'm new to online chess and I'm not sure when it is and isn't OK to access opening databases.  I'm guessing that it's wrong in a 30 minute game but OK in a 3 day?  I played a lot of snail-mail correspondence games when I was younger and always referred to MCO and ECO, so I'm assuming that a 3-day online game would be the same.  Please advise.

No outside resources can be used in Live games. In Daily, it is essentially correspondence. No engines, tablebases or other players can give assistance. Book, videos, databases of games (though they shouldn't be primarily engine game or include a lot of engine score evaluations) are allowed.
