Any predictions for where chess will be in 10, 20, 50 years?
will 960 become the new standard? will it remain the same? or will it die out?

One of the main concerns that people have is that cheating would become much easier with greater technology, eventually killing chess as a competitive sport/game. I doubt that that would ever happen though.
In 10 years: 10 piece tablebases created. Most chess is played online. OTB chess clubs have almost died out. The only OTB chess left is in the professional cliques or in some scholastic arenas.
In 20 years: Quantum computers have become mainstream. 15 piece tablebases have been completed. Tablebases are also being created for all of the possible chess960 starting positions. The world chess championship is split into perfomance enhanced [quantum chip in the brain that gives extra intelligence and databases] and non-performance enhanced titles.
In 50 years: The entire chess 32 piece tablebase is complete: it is "solved". People don't play much chess anymore. People are too busy flying spacecraft around the galaxy and enslaving alien life forms to be able to think about it. From time to time for the heck of it two intergalactic bounty smugglers get together and have a wager that whoever wins a chess game will be given the nearest planet.
