The great Bobby

Half an hour ago I heard on the news, our great mentor is gone forever, he went back to that other universum where he came from. Studying his games changed my life en gave me an idee what timeless beauty means. I have a book with all his games, I consider it as a tresor and I'm sure there will never come a chessplayer like he was.  For me he was the greatest of al times: he was the greatest ever in romantic and scientific chess playing, he combined this two total  different worlds like a child can play with simple toys.

Cry  Farewell Bobby...  (Some may not bother at all because of many controversies, but I don't judge the man--that's between him and his maker.)

When I started playing tourneys back in the 1970's, all the high schoolers played sicilian najdorf and kings indian and ruy lopez, all because of Fischer. He had taken on the Soviet Machine and beat it single handed. It was such a political time, cold war still going on and the USA had a champion over the big red russian bear.

I can see some of his hate for USA. He was their champion and they turned their back on him and ridiculed him. He obviously had some mental illnesses, but he was quite possibly the best of all time too. He crushed Taminov, Larsen and dispatched Petrosian (who was probably better than Spassky then) and then beat Spassky.

If modern medicines and therapy techniques had been available for him to help regulate his mental issues, no telling how good he could have been. I know it would have helped him deal with life.

Bobby, we played over your games, you taught us how to play, you gave us great joy in your brilliance and hope in taking on the world. I personally am very grieved at your passing. I will light you a candle. May God grant you peace.

Since now on the greatest chess genius Bobby Fischer is out of criticism and suspicions. May his game with God end in draw in all other ways too.

bobby liked screwing with people.  it wouldn't surprise me if the disappearance and all the controversies were just part of the show.  he would not be a cultural icon without the eccentricity. ask elvis, john lennon, hendrix, morrison, cobain, or john belushi if you don't believe me.   or you can ask the person next to you at work to name 3  professional chess players (if it weren't for the celebrity generated from Deep Blue vs. Kasparov and his goals to change Russian politics, i  could say name 2).  bobby criticized everyone, every country, and himself worse of all. USA chose to let him represent us knowing he enjoyed self-defecating. what should we expect in return?  if he was of arab descent, he probably would have trashed muslims instead of his jewish heritage.

if i were to draw an editorial cartoon it would look like this:

God playing Bobby with an angel whispering to God, "you know what happened after Spassky.  if he beats you, we'll never-ever-eeeever see him again."

he'll continue to be missed. he has been missed for 30+ years. i wonder if "bobby" spottings will continue to be reported, i hope so.

Hello Ham,

Thanks for your reply, and I forgot to mention in my post: Thank you Bobby, for your visit of our world, wich wasn,t surely yours.

If I should have time enough, I would put this cartoon of you about God versus Bobby on drawing paper !

Friendly greatings,

Herman

Such a waste. Just as he was the greatest chessplayer of all time, he was also the greatest disappointment of all time. By walking away in 1975, he deprived all of us chess fans of decades of great chess.

So fitting that the 'greatest' passed away from this world in Iceland, and at the age of 64. GM Robert James Fischer will be remembered fondly by all chess aficionado's the world over. I was enthralled by the Fischer - Spassky World Championships, and I didn't even know how to play chess at that time! Bobby got me started. Capablanca,Alekhine and other greats will now welcome Bobby to their fold.

RIP. We will always remember you.
