The Great Carlini and His Annoying Fiddling?

Sort:

Carlini's FIDE rating is about 1700 rating. He almost always loses to FM Mark btw.

Trash talking is the whole point of those games. It's mostly to encourage non players to get involved in chess. It's about having fun, not about ratings.

Carlini and his gang have done more to popularize the game than most of us ever will.

Some guy named the Great Carlini plays 5 min games on video tubes and is extremely good; don't know if he's a GM, probably not, but obviously above 2000.  He trash talks a lot while playing.   But to me, his fiddling with his captured pieces, rolling them in his fingers, pounding them on the board, is beyond annoying.  Would this be allowed in tournament play?  Even if he just tapped them quietly on the table and rolling them in his fingers?

(course I know he does this in these 'park' games just to annoy opponents, as he does with his trash talking)

The trash talking happens because its for the views... of course trash talking isn't allowed in OTB, and if his opponent finds his piece tapping to be annoying in OTB, then he will need to stop. However, casual 5 mins coffeehouse chess has no rules

His name is Carl Hyne, he is a pretty strong Blitz Player rated 2124 on USCF. His positional play is excellent but does make a few errors.  He was in an accident this February and just returning to play. It’s more for entertainment and they use a clock move (not touch) concept which is not how competitive chess is played.

I would have to say that a chess rating over 2000 is extremely good.

If you can't take trash talk you are soft and weak. Street chess has little to no rules, just like street basketball has little to no rules. Want to become a man? Play the Great Carlini, and try not to cry.

I have a +2 score vs the "great" carlini

carlini, (coffee chess and agadmator) have preformed cpr while the patient (chess) was almost dead and brought it back to life... lets be thankful and salute them for that

Annoyed by trash talking? It is to be expected when playing matches in public such as in parks or coffee houses. It’s part of the culture at least in the US.

If you want a serious match, you can play at a club or at your house, or maybe you can find someone who will agree to tournament rules.

Does anyone know his uscf or fide otb?

I found his name.  Carl "The Great Carlini” Hyne. He has a US Chess blitz rating of 2124 and a Quick rating of 2080. At the same time, his regular rating is 2009.  He holds the title NM (National Master), but I can not find a reference for that.

  • This might be his IFC page (he is listed as Canadian and has no ratings listed).
  • He is not in the Chess Federation of Canada members' database.
  • Here is his United States Chess Federation member's Database (You have to search for him, I could not link to his page).
  • His USCF ID is 10438896.
  • chessbase.com has a post that talks about him.
  • You can buy him a coffee at his PayPal account.
  • Coffee Chess has a Patreon Account - I guess we could become a patron and keep the videos coming.
  • There was a 4 July 1959 episode of True Story called The Great Carlini.
  • There is a DC Comics issue, The Power of Shazam! Vol 1 29, which has the character The Great Carlini.

I do hate when he sandbags little kids and allows them to win.  The videos all seem a little contrived. Do the videos ever show him winning? However, lately, I have a compelling curiosity (obsession) to watch the videos. I want to play him here on Chess.com or on Lichess.org.

You don't have to be "extremely good" to be a chess hustler.  I usually rate between 1300 and 1600 on different online chess sites (I haven't been officially rated since middle school, back in the 1970s, and forget which governing body it was).  For fun, I go to a local bar and play for drinks or dinner.  I win about 99% of the time (lots of drunk opponents).  The bar patrons think I'm a great player (I don't refute them).  Back in the late 80s/early 90s, while attending Purdue, several of us "hustled" for coffee at a joint called the Blue Café (see my blog post).  About 10 or 20 times in my hustling career, someone, who actually studies chess, has shown up and beat me (often quite soundly).   I usually know right away someone is a decent player by their opening.

Does he even have an online chess.com/other site account which he regularly plays on?

Oh, by the way, he recovered from getting hit by a car and was playing again by last July.
