The Grenke freestyle tournament with classical time control

Hi all.  The Grenke freestyle tournament is currently in round 7.  It's a 9 round swiss with a time control of 90 min + 30 seconds from move 1.  I'm very happy to see more of these events but this is the first I've seen of a swiss system, a classical time control, & this many players.  There are 297 playing (they only allowed players with 1950+ fide ratings to enter).  I've been paying attention to the freestyle events that Magnus & his partner have been having but this event is even better because it's not limited to the worlds elite.  I hope to see more of these.

Is anybody else watching this tournament?

Either way, it's a slow time control for freestyle which is a good thing.

Magnus just won this Grenke event 9 - 0!! He won by 2 full points.

There were 7 players at 7 points & 16 at 6.5. He completely dominated. I think this event had some odd rule where players could switch from the freestyle to regular chess up til round 5 or the other way too then back. I think. So I think they could combine their points & mix regular chess with freestyle. Some odd rule.

He is still the #1 player in regular chess too. All the top players agree with that. The reason he didn't participate in the world championship is because it takes so much effort, time, money, and drive that he didn't feel it was worth prepping for another match for what he got in return.
