The most expensive chess set in the world

Sort:
JohnClayborn

Well, I must say, weather or not the Charles Hollander Set is the most expensive or not, it's horribly gaudy. I dont like that one at all. I do however like the Ivory set above, and I love the amber set. If I could afford a nice marble or amber set I would definitely get it. :)

I here that. What gets me is how do they know its 45 million years old?

Process called "carbon dating".

That is a beautiful set, no doubt I'd have to sell myself to afford it!

TheGenuineArticle

i like the wood grain but i am sorta of more attracted to the crystal chess set

you never say the price, so it cannot be the most expensive, since it does not have a price. end of discussion ;)

I don't follow your logic -- not stating the price means that the board can't possibly be the most expensive?  I'll grant that the claim may need verification, but this would also be the case even if the price were posted.

Beautiful sets though -- the second amber set in particular.

These chess sets from Amber have something more then a regular price (money). They also have a mental value - art value, because they are designed by genious artists and designers and made from realy unique materials.

Note, that Eveone CAN make a chess set from gold...b-o-r-i-n-g.                      BUT there is only one maker in the world that can create such amber sets according to a technological process allowing wood to be inlaid with amber.     It sounds strange, but Indeed, it was impossible for all chess makers for many years,  to inlay wood with amber because of the differences of phisical characteristics of these two materials, amber just could not be inside wood, it poped out every time when the surrounding temperature was changing. So.. It means that this only master Emelyanov Alexander figured out what to do and patented method of amber inlays. There is something even more interesting then the price which is defenetly the most high! Did you know that amber is a fossiized sap of trees that grew many millions ago - and when the sap was driping down the tree branches it got different plant life inside, like moscitos and insects and stuff, so amber is not a stone or a rock, its not cold, when you see close, you can notice fossilized plants and insects and sometimes lizards inside the amber.chess pieces. I am attaching a photo.

sorry bud but mental value is not what raises the price no one cares. if you want something really old and expensive get a chess set made from diamond. those are billions of years old (unless they are artificial diamonds) and very expensive. no one wants your old tree juice.

I totally disagree with you! The mental value of the things can often be even higher than the value of the material it's made of.  And it doesn't need to be very old even. However it can be pretty new. As an example, works of Picasso, Van Gogh and modern artists, especially Russian artists, that are now sold for millions bucks in Sotheby's and Christie's. This is art and the value of the art is all about mentality. Talking about nonart things, I can name Louis Vuitton's bags and Prada.

Last, but not the least, the amber chess sets are outstanding! Statnov,  do you have any other pictures of such sets?

LADY-GREY

Au contraire, VladamirKramnik.  "A thing of beauty is a  joy forever."  Can't attribute the quote, don't remember. But the sets r beautiful.

Some people just do not like history.... for those of you who don't and who do, this marvelous history of trees (for making  chess sets) might be interesting for you.  In nowdays, an oldest living tree (Giant Sequoia) is growing in California National Park. Its name is Genaral Sherman. Its height is about 275 feet (83.8 m). This tree is about 2300 - 2700 years old!!! Just think about it.

The oldest (not living trees) that are in some parts of the world, are older then (what do you think?) dinosaurs, thease trunks were excavated from rocks 330 millions years old, I saw it infront of the Natural History Museum in London

The amber chess set Samurai, as you already know - is made from fossilized bog oak tree (also called bog wood) that grew more than 2300 years ago in Russia, near rivers.

Bog-wood is wood from trees that have been buried in peatbogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained black, brown by tannins dissolved in the acidic water. Bog-wood represents the early stages in the fossilisation of wood, with further stages ultimately forming lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years.

The color of chess board is black is not because it was painted with black paint, but because it became black naturaly in peat bogs. When you play this set, you feel the history that this chess set has in it. Just think - this tree was growing when Jesus Christ was on the earth. Not its made for playing for the most interesting game on the planet!

.

One suggestion is that the unicorn is based on the extinct animal Elasmotherium, a huge Eurasian rhinoceros native to the steppes, south of the range of the woolly rhinoceros of Ice Age Europe. Elasmotherium was real and looked little like a horse, but it had a large single horn in its forehead. It became extinct about the same time as the rest of the glacial age megafauna.

Well, good story! All miracles and legends are based on something real, that's the way people come up with the legents and fairy tales. But there are some real things that people don't belive in. Like amber. I heard from a lot of people that they trully believe that it's not real fossilized resin of the trees! And this is also what makes amber so miraculous. :)

Oh, yeah, right, only poor people care about $5,000 Louis Vuitton bag or $5,000,000 art work of Nicolas Roerich. Cool

Its simple. If you say : "look at this chess set, its the most expensive in the world" then you show the chess set, nothing proves its the most expensive chess set.. what we want to see is a chess set, and a price, lol

But hey, if you dont follow my logic, then i guess theres a lot of things you cannot understand, since its fucking simple, LOL:D and i dont track this topic, so if you have a problem with that, pm me, or if you just want to talk in myt back, go ahead here ;)

That "Emelyanov and sons" amber set can not be sold by its owner at the moment. May be in the future on Sotheby's if the owner decides to. The price  is higher than The  Royal Diamond Chess by Charles Hollander (which was 5 million GBP as I remember).

£5M (GBP) = $9.8M (USD) at the time.... about $8M (USD) since currency crash.
