The Myth of Autism and Chess

Psychology is very complex because the brain is very complex, and diagnosing a deceased person is practically impossible. Granted Bobby Fischer had a lot of symptoms pointing towards psychosis, but we now know that there are multiple mental disorders that can trigger this. Lack of empathy and poor relationship skills could also be signs of antisocial personality disorder, etc.

He may have been autistic and he may have been schizophrenic, but to outright state that he was, both, and conclude that therefore autism and schizophrenia are the same thing. Well, let's just say I think we would give even Fischer's crazy ideas a run for his money...

Very well said!  I find it amusing that a "myth" is allegedly exposed here, yet it incorporates other myths to prove it.

I am a very, very, old man who acknowleges his "crude ignorance" with regard to the subject.  Yet, I still wait for someone to educate me about autism.  Understand I am a well-educated professional with many years of experience.  However, I have become in disputes with peers about autism.  I just don't get it.

Please see, I live in California, the land of fruits and nuts...where everybody has to have an excuse for being irresponsible...you are either black or Mexican or gay or transgender or and anarchist or antichrist or global or or terrorist or  patriot or logician or nut-cake liberal.

Thank you, Optimmist, for your well reasoned statement.  Again, I am trying to understand this autism stuff.  I reference Fritz Perls, a friend of mine in the 1970's.  He pointed out, with courage, how a person has vacancies (vacuna) in the brain or personality, resulting in "gaps" of cognition.  That is my whole point.  Autistic individuals have failed to acquire the "normal" socialization skills of families with a "stay at home" mother.  They are feral.   This is a fault of the so-called "woman's movement."  Children need a loving parent, man or woman.  Children, untaught, are animals.

DiogenesDue

I think your friend was trying to tell you something...

I strongly disagree that autism is the fault of the" woman's movement". My sister and 3 other members of my family are autistic. All 4 had stay at home mothers. Made no difference to their socialization skills.

Stunningly ignorant.

Oh? We should go back to the kitchen like the days of old? It's unfair to say a man can have a career while a woman can't. You say "Children need a loving parent, man or woman.../" but it's more often the woman who sacrifices.

Autism is not the fault of parents. I know a couple who has a pair of autistic twins. The twins got far more socialization in daycare. They're in grade school now. I see improvement every time they visit me. I doubt they would have been better off with a stay-at-home-mom because there would be a lot less people around to practice communication with. In daycare they were immersed in an environment full of communication. As for stay-at-home moms (and dads), I think it's a huge risk to be that financially dependent on anyone in this day and age.

Thank you all for your comments (positive or negative), but if you read carefully what I have written, you will see there is no prejudicial statements against women.  However, another person who is despised by the contemporary political world, Sigmund Freud brilliantly stated: "Anatomy is destiny."  My particular "ax to grind" is the ridiculous popular notion that men and women are the same.

It is not that one sex is better than the other, but understanding that parents are complementary, not duplicates.  Nature is very efficient and for the last 20,000 years, each gender had a specific role.  Men were the "hunter/gatherers" and women created the fabric of civilization by raising children and sitting around chatting with others about stuff while preparing food.

One contributor thought this was "stunningly ignorant" which I do not know whether this is an admission or a judgment, but nobody well-educated can dispute the truth of what I just wrote.  The very basis of our evolution has been turned upside down by liberal fascists who promote the wrong ideas.

I have had heated discussions with colleagues who argue that the physical brains of autistic individuals are different that the average person.  OK, fine, I am sure that is true, but so is the brain of schizophrenics abnormal.  What is not realized is, the brain in the first year of childhood is very fragile and if neglected, it can go sideways.  This fact leads me another "pet peeve" which is everybody these days has to be a victim.  "It's my race or my sex or some other disability for the reason I cannot succeed."  There are many levels and degrees of autism, instead of simply admitting, "This kid is screwed up."

I don't know what this has to do with Chess.  I only added the game to the topic so it would be accepted.

Chess is not just a game... But it will take your soul if you accidentally let it. It's a very serious business. Rip Fischer

Appeal to nature fallacy? History class is over men. This is a new era buddyboy, and I dont see what the heck does mom have to do with autism.

Anyways, you may argue Fischer was slightly austistic because he has a very emotional guy and wasnt the best at socializing.

The Refrigerator Mother theory has long been debunked - you are stunningly ignorant.

I dont know Rick, it looks fake, he said he was educated and hanged out with high society, he must be EDUCATED, HE MUST!!!!

Educated people can still be ignorant and insensitive.

@Squarely:

Just because things were a certain way for many years doesn’t mean they should stay that way. People did many stupid things for eons, stupid things that should be done away with (like war and slavery). I’d rather live in a progressive society. No one that I know wants to sit around cleaning things, cleaning clothes, chatting, cooking, changing dirty diapers and preparing food. I'm sure some women still want to do that but in my opinion having a career and being financially independent is infinitely better. No one has the right to deny us that.

Fabric of civilization? We were at the mercy of a man with no way out if the man was physically abusive, verbally abusive or cheating on us. From what I’ve read, the stats for abuse are still very high. Now, we can simply leave and support ourselves if we’re mistreated or cheated on.

You’re making a generalization saying that “everyone these days has to be a victim.”

What's wrong with having kids later in life?

This question is for information purposes only and in no way indicates a prejudice, implied or real.

I would never put up with a cheater, not for any reason. Some women and men put up with betrayal though.
