The Myth of Magnus 3000

A couple of years ago there was a thread making the rounds here that asked if Magnus could make 3000.

For many it seemed a forgone conclusion that it would happen, in spite of the fact that it's easy to show mathmatically that it's close to impossible to make 3000 while playing "only" 2700-2800 rated players.

As Magnus shot to 2882 the noise got louder.  And then the inevitable happened and Magnus has crashed down to a more normal rating in relation to his peers.

So nowadays I would hope that everyone is willing to set aside the pipe dream of the 3000 Elo at this time.

Of course, the other question is can Magnus still cross the 2900 Elo barrier?  I think that if he rediscovers his motivation then that might be possible.  However, only time will tell if he will find his lost mojo.

That I highly doubt. I think he's a solid 2800, but I don't think that currently he can even be in the discussion of greatest ever.

I'm sure he'll eventually reach 2900. Even if he doesn't get any better, rating inflation will probably allow him to get there.

Mehn...with the way Magnus is playing these days, who knows? How he won the 2015 Grand Chess Tour is still a bit of a surprise

People that said he could cross 3000 are the same people that now say he's a patzer. Mindless drivel on both ends. That's what happens when everybody's allowed to have mighty Opinions.

He hasn't played any 2300 players lately.
