...The New Bright Yellow Ultimate Chess Pieces - Thoughts

The pics are for a set he bought years ago - not the new yellow design.

Oh, OK, my bad...

I have the new version of the set x 2 (they are yellow) they weight more and are a little bigger than the older version of it, which I also have (cream color). Both versions of the set are very nice to play with...

I have the Chess House newer bright yellow set. The king weighs 3 ounces while the USCF triple weighted sets I've purchased king's weigh 2 oz. ( quadruple set king's 2.5 oz.). These are hefty easy handling pieces. The extra ounce and design make these sets superior to play with. The yellow looks great on a blue board - poor on brown, good as neutral on green, better than white on green.

The Knights look cheaply carved, and the Pawns are short and stubby in shape. Thus, while I saw another thread about yellow "ultimate chess pieces" that looked good, I think this set... is not particularly good-looking, at least as pictured both here and in some of the initial links.
However, it is heavily weighted, which is an important quality feature in its favor, and it's exactly the standard 3.75" tournament height.
I just ordered this set from American Chess Equipment. Seems like a good set by reading the specs on the website.

The cost of shipping anything these days is insane. But for 4 lbs that's probably "reasonable".
I bought 2 of the yellow Ultimate chess set reissues. Think I used them for a week and haven't touched them since. The piece quality is amazing but the color looks like garbage so I don't like to leave them out. Which is what everyone told Shelby when he sent a picture of the color samples from the factory. He decided not to listen which is why he's still sitting on half of his inventory a year later. Would recommend looking elsewhere for plastic pieces.

I like the v2.0 set better. Both in color and in size. The OG UCP sets to me were terrible due to the cheaper quality in plastic and the weights coming loose with only a handful of games.
The yellow is bright but I don't mind it with them on an Olive Green mousepad board. I got my Ultimate Chess Pieces v2.0 from Amazon for $15 cheaper than ACE is selling it for. Including shipping it does come out to be $15 cheaper.

Mike,
I appreciate the mention on the quality of the sets, but when you say "everyone" complained about the color of the sets you are being a little misleading. You are only seeing the people who complained, not the people who like the sets. The people who complained wanted me to make the sets in white and black, which will never happen. That will make the sets just like the ones everyone else sells. They will not stick out.
What will be happening is they will go back to the original color.
As for me "not listening", I would have to disagree with that too. When you get a product done with a new factory, you pay in full before they start the product. Remember we are dealing with overseas factories. Nothing could be done after I saw the color, the pieces had already been produced. What I can do is deal with the situation, get through the original batch, and get them corrected in the new batch.
I have to get through another 300 sets before I can re-order.
Thanks for your support,

300 to go... and the wait continues
Thanks for the update Shelby.
By the way, how did your chess piece solar bleaching experiment turn out?

It became just a tinge lighter but I had ceased that operation last year. Didn't resume at all this year. I'll wait for the new cream colored batch Shelby will have in queue once his stock is sold then I will buy 2 or 3 or those. I gifted one of the bleached ones to my older brother when the new sets arrive I will probably keep just one of the old for old times sake.
Has anyone purchased the new bright yellow ultimate chess pieces?
I've seen a lot of cons and pros about the color (more cons).
Can anyone speak to the quality and playability?
What about the color? I've seen a couple threads that say that after the the initial production run is sold out - estimated to be 2K to 3k - they suspect/hope that it will be produced in a more traditional color.
A number of sites are selling the exact same set (different prices) - Does anyone know if these sets are all made by the same manufacturer?
They are being sold by:
ChessHouse - $39.95

Rochester Chess Center - $34.95
