Chess does nothing to better humanity. Not that it should, not that it could, but it is not doing anything productive in any way at all. Time is limited on earth, anyone can go at any time. So chess can be for fun I suppose, but really it is pointless.

Each act we do, no matter what, is not pointless. It has an impact.. negatively or positively. So does chess.
It reminds me of the common scenario in prisons all over the world. Inmates playing chess.. better I thought that bashing each other up. Pointless? It's a matter of perspective I say.
The irony is that you can actually get one point by adding to this pointless thread.

Precisely, life has a point. And chess is not it. And neither is 99% of everything everybody else does.
Personally, I am disgusted by the idea that life could have anything as simple as a "point". Life is beautiful because it is complex (like chess!!!!!!!!!)
For example in addition to your "otherwordly" point, one class of people has another "point" to their lives. That class is slaves: they had the "point" of serving the master. Since all civilised countries have a complete ban on slavery, people have obviously decided that they would rather not have a "point" and would just have fun and use their lives rather than posting on this topic and worrying about the "point".
Stop indoctrinating and let us get on with our chess.

I guess it is very personal. For me and for many others chess is meaningful and important. For others it is pointless. I can't argue with someone that say that chess is pointless, but he should understand that this only means that it is pointless for himself.
