To succeed--or at least not make a huge blunder--one must think about the potential consequences of each move because there is always someone or something ready to take advantage of you. Yep, this does sound like paranoia; but a little is necessary in chess, and life, because mankind is basically oppositional (greedy). Proof of this fact jingles in your pocket. Why else do we need to carry keys?

Backgammon is a better metaphor for life. Because of the random element, you can loose even when playing perfectly, or win while playing horribly. Over time, skill pays off.
