the stalemate rule

How's it going everyone! I'm 29 and just started playing chess, i'm about 1 month in and i'm having a really good time playing and learning. My opponent got burned by the lame stalemate rule against me and i thought it's an awful rule, its a cheap draw and the player who is dominating shouldn't get punished IMO. All the explanations just don't jive with me but i was wondering how others felt about it, thanks.
