The unrated player

I always have mixed feelings when I play against an unrated player in a tournament (not online, but in the real world). I do not know what to expect from the player. We have seen many times in the sport world how an unrated player can shock you (see unseeded players in tennis matches). Also, in South Africa we have unions which you can join. But if you join a different union, your rating resets to 0. I find this highly unfair for both the player and the opponent. The player, because it looks like he's a newbie and the opponent, because the player in question might have a high rating. So my question is this: Who should we fear most? The highly rated or the unrated?

some of the best chess players  "play the Board / position " looking for the objectively best moves, rather than "play the opponent" -- which seems to be your dilemma -- ie; how do we treat Unrateds.

As classic example of someone who played the opponent, as many of us do, was former world champion Emanuel Lasker, who sometimes purposely played inferior moves against people who he thought it would work against.

Play a few unRateds with both strategies and see which you prefer !
