There is nothing funny about chess!

I'm tired of ordinary people acting like chess is no big deal and that chess experts are nerds.  Chess masters are like royalty.  Royals and elites considered chess training a mandatory part of learning strategy and objectivity.

When I hear comedians joking about chess and chess players, I am offended.  What have they ever done?  The only time they ever mate is when they're horny.  Chess is a game of brilliance and wisdom and only cool people play the game.  Comedians just smell and think they are funny, but they're not.  And I can beat them at chess.

Great chess players are trained not to have a sense of humor.  It's very important that you look vaguely mean when playing chess and sneer at people who laugh at the game, in order to defend its honor.

Wow bro. Take a rest. Comedians makes fun of aids and all sort of stuff. You should go laugh it will help you!

TheBigDecline

It's cool to have an opinion, everybody has one!

You're joking, right?

Scottrf

They smell? Great banter.

Telling a comedian he smells is like telling a chess player D4.

LIke, "Why D4 did you smell that comedian?"

Is it really "cool" to have an opinion, man?  Dude.  It's your opinion that it's cool to have an opinion.  Only if you have a cool opinion is it cool.  If your opinion is not cool, then it isn't cool.   If everyone has an opinion it can't be cool by definition.  Cool has to be differentiated from the common somehow or it has no meaning.  I mean, it's cool if you want to say having opinions is cool, I mean that's your opinion.  Even if your opinion isn't cool, you might be cool.  If you play chess and think comedians smell, you're cool, even if your opinion is not cool.

Rasparovov

There was even a comedian in Norway making fun of the Breivik-attack.

I guess we're cool then, eh? Laughing

Rational_Optimist

can you be specific and tell us those jokes they make about chess?

i m really curious and needs to laugh.

but dont expect ordinary people to understand such a complicated, mind boggling game.chess is a combination of art, science and sport.they love  games which its complexity can be explained in a single piece of paper.when you dont understand a game, how can you enjoy it?

most people find it hard to think deeply and some of them try to belittle the beauty of chess since otherwise they need to admit chess is beyond their comprehension.

Beautifully said! That reminds me of something Gelfand said, a couple of months ago. Chess doesn't need to be appealing to the plebs, no justifications need to be made. If you don't see the intrinsic majesty of games from Tal, Fischer or Kasparov, you might as well be blind.

I totally agree with all this, however, some (not all) chess players do tend to be a little eccentric

lol.

Honestly very few people will judge you solely on the fact you play chess. maybe if you are awkward about saying you play chess and show weakness they will. If you say it upfront like its no big deal people will respect you.

I dont think ive ever been called a nerd. Though i must admit, i have been to chess tournaments where the players dont exactly give off the impression that they are not nerds, playing games like magic and yugioh between matches.

So, like I went to this party at my friend Josh's house and he's in the 9th grade and all so he's really cool and plays soccer and once kissed a girl so I thought it was really cool that he invited me. So I got dressed in my best striped shirt and plaid pants and put on a whole BUNCH of my dad's AquaVelva just in case I got to sit next to Jessica later in the evening I didn't want her to think I had B.O. or anything. And that cowlick in the front of my hair kept sticking up so I smeared some vaseline on it to keep it down but I got a little on my glasses so I couldn't see real well and had to keep tilting my head to look people in the eye. And when Brad told a joke I thought was funny I laughed really loud and kept laughing after everyone else had stopped so that Brad would know I thought his joke was really funny. And I told people I was on the chess team and they kind of avoided me. So, you're right, people just don't GET chessplayers.
