We were on a C141 cargo, set up for troop transport, I was Air force, not a member of the flight crew. We had mulitiple missions, so we had Army Airborn Rangers on the plane. Not too long into the flight when we had serious problems, we lost our hydraulics, Our flaps were not working properly, had no brakes for landing, and God knows what else was wrong. When I looked at the faces of the flight crew, I got plenty nervous, and since there was nothing I could do, decided to write a farewell letter to my wife, then I realized a paper letter will not survive a crash, what can I do to kill the time, then I remembered I had my little card board chess game in my pocket, and started to play against myself.
They actually started to open up the fuselage, oh we dropped allitide to to do this. What they were doing is to use hand cranks to control the flaps and the brakes and adding fluids, not sure what for? Any ways I could not get over the Rangers how relaxed they were, playing cards, like what ever happens happens. They directed us to make our landing at one of the longest runways in the US, and when we finally came in, we were "hot", I thought we would never slow down, but I am here writing this chess story. This is one chess game that really helped.
, but I must say of all the chess games I have every played, this one was the most stressful, one which I did not care who the winner might be, just so I can talk about it later........ I always wondered if there was any one else on the plane I could have played against?
