6 million members and there's still only like 200 active people on the forums.

So I speak for 30,000!

Kenpo, including people who logged in once many years ago and haven't been back since is deceptive. People who navigate to the site for the first time, as you say, do not expect that most of those mentioned members haven't been here for years, and most were probably one timers and/or facebook accounts that were "active members" for a day or two. They of course expect that "members" will refer to people that actually use the site at least once in a while. That's a reasonable expectation.

I'm well aware that it's common to misrepresent how many members and viewers a site has, and there are no laws being broken. But just as they are free to do that, I'm free to point out the deception. They know very well that saying "6 million members" does not convey accurately how many users the site has (note the present tense, which excludes people who haven't been here for years and will never return).

They could very accurately convey who many real members there are by giving the number of players that have logged in in the last month or some similar metric. It would be many tens of thousands at least, maybe even a hundred thousand or more. That's extremely impressive. There's no need for slimy marketing techniques to exaggerate how popular they are.

And it should matter whether they are counting closed accounts in that figure since closed accounts aren't "members" anymore, and closed accounts are not even "accounts" anymore...they are nothing.

Lets say the site claims it has 100 "members."  In the next day, 3 get banned, 2 close accounts voluntarily, and 6 new accounts open up.

Would they count the next day's total as 101 or 106?  I bet it is the latter!  This sort of numbers inflation has been going on for years now.

I don't think they count closed accounts. Wouldn't make any sense.

corrijean

Do you show as "online" if you are playing on a mobile device?

batgirl

Everyone seems to know what is and isn't counted.  How, exactly, can I get this data?

No, what "everyone seems to know" is that how the site is counting what its counting is intentionally and obviously misleading.

To Batgirl:  Why are you such a lackey for the site management?

You are johnnymusacha reincarnated or I'll eat horsefeathers.

kco

and you seem to be a good friend of queendancer already

I'm glad that you asked that question Batgirl. One answer would be that some of the people leaving posts here are Psychic and are reading the tea leaves in their tea cups. Then we probably have some visitors from the ESP crowd, they just hold their hands up to the monitor and the answers come straight to them somehow. What else could it be as I would never suspect that they are making up this data. Innocent

But it would make sense if they wanted to inflate their numbers.

Another thing that I just noticed while I was exploring the site features tonight:

On the "home" page it has stats for "members" teams, tournaments etc.

But right now it says there are 5,100 ish members "online" right now, but about 6,600 in "live chess."  I don't understand that.  Don't you have to be "online" first, to play "live chess"?

No it wouldn't because a lie, and they could be called on it.

batgirl

Weird.  I saw corrijean's quote from Broctoon's post  but I never saw Broctoon's post and couldn't find it. So, I checked and Broctoon's acount is gone, so his post disappeared.  Something fishy?

corrijean

He's a re-tread of a banned cheater. Site must have caught on and re-banned him.

kco

yeah is the old Johnny trick.

batgirl

johnnymusacha was banned also??

kco

yep !
