thoughts on old indian defence?

I recommend investing some time in learning the King's Indian, instead of the Old Indian.
The Old Indian is "playable", but not ideal ... black is generally struggling from the start, from an inferior position. You also need to know how to use your queenside pawns in a high-level way, just to avoid being positionally smothered.
Basically, it's harder to play, with more disadvantages than advantages. White has an easier game, a freer position, and almost no concerns to worry about.
The King's Indian Defense is essentially an "improved" version of the Old Indian, as the KID offers a similar "feel", but with more counter-attacking chances for black. White has to be more careful against the KID, and white has more ways to go wrong.
(I can't comment on the Philidor Defense, as I don't really play it.)

For a while I was using the old indian setup as a sort of catch all system against openings or move orders where I didn't have prep.
Sort of like using a London setup as black against any flank openings you're unsure about... it's safe and easy.
I will say as white I'm pretty confident whenever I see my opponent go for a philidor or old indian type of setup... but not so much that I'd warn you against playing them... and yeah the engine hates it. If white plays perfectly you're probably screwed... but one small inaccuracy makes it go from +1.00 to +0.3 so unless you're facing some young FM who is spending 8 hours a day on his opening prep you'll be fine
I'm thinking of having a repertoire with Black based on the Philidor Defense and the Old Indian Defense. The philidor is solid but the old Indian defense is not liked by stockfish. Even so, I prefer to know the opinion of the chess players than the stockfish. My goal is to have a compact repertoire but I also don't want to be almost lost from the opening. What do you think?
