Timeout vs Resignation

Has this ever happened to anyone? Usually when my opponent blunders the opening, he'll leave the match and I have to wait for his timer to hit zero before I know I've won. Sometimes the player comes back at the very last minute hoping I left and starts making moves quickly (I lost a game or two over that), like why don't people just resign? Are they unaware that they can or do they just do it to be an a**hole.
