Best to decide how much a day you want to spend on chess then organize your time into study and practice(playing). I recommend at least a 50-50 split between playing and studying, with emphasis on playing. Improving your thought process and visualization/calculation are the two best ways to improve, so working on analyzing your games, improving your awareness of the relationships between the pieces on the board and what’s immediately interacting with what each move, along with a firm understanding of the opening principles and adhering to them will get you on the right trajectory. If you want I’d be happy to meet up in a Chess.com classroom sometime for free and go over some concepts and study ideas for you, maybe review some of your recent games and help you learn how to do that as well. But in the meantime enjoy the learning progress and have fun with chess- it’s a game after all. happy.png

General knowledge doesn't quickly improve your results, but it's good to know. Chess.com covers some basics here:

Other than that play games with a time control that's long enough for you to be greedy... by greedy I mean do your best not to lose any piece for free, not even a single pawn. Playing games with this mindset and solving tactics puzzles is what gives new players the most improvement.

These 3 things (basic knowledge, playing, and solving tactics) will help you improve quickly. Of the 3 playing is the most important.

I see you've played a single rapid game so far and lost 250 points. If this is the 500 rating you're referring to, it's likely very inaccurate, and I suggest you play some more games until your rating starts to stabilize. Then, you should only gain or lose 7-9 rating points per game, and you will be matched with opponents closer to your actual rating.
