I had guessed that much... what grade does it relate to? Is it specific to USA and/or other countries?
As far as I am aware, we don't have any NM's in any countries within the UK. There can't be many European countries with NM players either, its rare to see it. I have only noticed it via online chess. This is why I am wondering if its exclusive to the USA and other countries.
I believe any title requires 3 norms for the relevant title as well as the target grade. i.e. for IM you need 3xIM Norms + hit the 2400 grade. FM/CM/NM must be the same format as you get 2300,2200,2100 players that don't have these titles.
CM + NM are both rare in Europe. CM is a little more common. I'd still like to know if some titles are generaly country specific.
FM, CM and NM don't require norms. All you need is to at some point hit that rating mark during a tournament, or after. If during a tournament you go over 2200 FIDE, but at the tournaments end due to a loss or two go down to 2190, you will still get the CM title. As FIDE at one point calculated your rating to be over 2200.
Not country specific.
If I had played a bit longer and not quit when I did, I'd probably get a title soon too. WCM or CM that is.
CM titles are becoming more and more regular.
I'm happy to stand corrected on this with regards to norms. But that surely can't be right? We only have 1xCM in Scotland, and 0 NM's. It also doesn't appear to be difficult to get these titles... I am sure I could get NM or CM with a little more work if thats the case (and I'm really not that good). We would have loads of these titles in Scotland too... which again leads me to believe it may be country specific. I am going to find out more if I can and get back to you guys.
Again happy to stand corrected on anything here should I have it wrong as I often do :)
Being from the UK, the typical titles I see are the occassional CM, along with FM/IM/GM.
However on chess.com I see quite a few players with the NM title. Oddly the rating for a NM player seems to vary from as low as 1700 all the way up to 2600.
What exactly is a NM title? What is involved or required in obtaining a NM title?
