Remember that you do not get the CM and NM title automatically. You do have to pay/apply for them. (usually done by your federation if you want the title, I dunno how things work in Britain).
I know many people would probably not bother paying for a NM title when they aspire to CM or FM titles, or even bigger.

Again it's got nothing to do with countries. It's FIDE.

Get your FIDE rating up to 2200 and you can buy the CM title.

Yes FIDE is the World Chess Federation.

It was like that when I played chess many moons ago, and it's the same today. CM title was introduced in 2002.

Go to fide.com and read ;-)

What I wrote on the previous page is correct:
"FM, CM and NM don't require norms. All you need is to at some point hit that rating mark during a tournament, or after. If during a tournament you go over 2200 FIDE, but at the tournaments end due to a loss or two go down to 2190, you will still get the CM title. As FIDE at one point calculated your rating to be over 2200."

It's that simple. Smile

FIDE doesn't list the NM title on their rating list, and nor can you search for players with the NM title...

I can find out more from my own federation and report back. There must be reasons why we don't have CMs and NMs a plenty if it is really that simple. Give me a day or two, keep tracking this thread and I will report back with anything I find out.

I think we all know who FIDE are :)

FIDE doesn't give NM titles.

Only national federations do.

More and more people in Norway get CM and NM titles, cause they want them.
Like I said, you do need to apply. It's not automatic. So many people doesn't bother. I personally wouldn't bother with a WNM, NM or WCM title, but I'd get WFM or CM.

It is funny that you wouldn't bother with a title that is far beyond what us normal people could reach.

I got NM in USA for 2200 uscf , I didnt have to pay for it nor apply for it , it was automatic after reaching 2200 the first time back in 1984 .... I also am an NM of Portugal after reaching 2200 FIDE rating , again I didnt apply and didnt pay for it , it was automatic .... I dont know about other countries . Where FIDE titles are concerned I do think you have to pay/apply for the title which usually your national federation does for you . When they don't then the individual has to ... or they don't get the title .

I'm happy to stand corrected on this with regards to norms. But that surely  can't be right? We only have 1xCM in Scotland, and 0 NM's..

Scots won't pay for lower titles...Makes perfect sense to me.

Avatar of noahs_dad

NM is country specific, as the Scottish federation people have confirmed to me you  can't achieve a NM in Scotland. Only CM,FM,IM,GM and the Womens titles.

I really dont think its as easy as you think to a achieve 2200 .  The list I give shows Scotland with fewer than 30 players rated over 2200 .

Avatar of noahs_dad

I have no intentions to demean any titles NM Reb. I never said it was 'easy' I was saying it is simple as it seems relatively simple. Scottish players are seemingly not choosing the CM title as it is not considered worth the registration cost.

I don't disagree 30 players rated over 2200 is a low amount, but it is all relative to a small country with 5 Million population and more so that chess isn't in very healthy state in Scotland. There is little opportunity for Scottish players, and little motivation, as to play here chess here is very expensive. For the stronger players there is little (if any) financial reward either.

Thanks for the info everyone.

There is an NM title granted by the English Chess Federation.  I know this brah.

WildTigress I stand corrected on my assumptions on Norms, you are quite right in what you are saying.

NM these days is quite rare and country specific. Some useful info below from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_title

National titles[edit]

Some national chess federations award titles such as "National Master" (NM). National chess federations are free to set whatever standards they want for such titles, which are not recognized by FIDE. Standards for "Master" titles in different countries vary, but are usually based on criteria such as achieving a certain rating (typically about 2200 Elo), achieving the required number of tournament performances ("norms") at a certain level, or featuring prominently in the country's national championship. In some cases, it may extend to honorary titles awarded to (for example) prominent chess administrators, business patrons or politicians. Since the introduction of the FIDE Master (FM) title in 1978, some federations such as those of Ireland and Germany have ceased awarding National Master titles, apparently regarding them as obsolete.

You realize that anyone can write anything on Wikipedia, correct?

How do you know that information is accurate?
