Titles

I always thought that to get one of the red GM, NM, FM titles you needed to be a really high rank. but i just saw an NM but he was only ranked 1420 (15|10) im higher than this =/ so im wondering how one gets a title of this kind on chess.com?

He probably just clobbered a NM, with such a rating, in the 'dome.

you only attain these titles in otb practice.  internet chess has nothing to do with it.

I watched one of those thunderdome fights once and I decided that a career in underwater basket-weaving was a much more stable career (with less risk to boot).

thanks petrosianic, but what is "otb practice"? sorry i really do have no knowledge about that title system 

OTB = over the board, as opposed to online chess.  To be more specific, you'll have to compete in USCF otb games in order to get the NM title, etc.

over the board, i.e. sanctioned, old fashioned face-to-face chess.

They are known to be a GM if they give a file/documents approving that they are titled players.
