Wrong forum, I apologize. Was supposed to be off-topic.
Today I learned - Anya T-J was whipped to learn chess for Queen's Gambit
change the title. whipping people is not to be used lightly in order to shock people into clicking your forum post.
Wtf. I clearly used "Whipping" figuratively. It is a very common expression. And I don't know how to edit the posts in this damn forum.
That's called method acting. Unfashionable these days, because it can easily do a person's head in. Hence the 'cracked actor' stereotypes of the 60's - 90's and the ideology of 'suffering for one's art' (cf: Keith Ledger. ) That's why there's such a miserable lack of good actors nowadays. You don't have to 'fake' being frazzled if you are. And you actually EARNED that million dollars.
yes, you were using it figuratively to shock and drive clicks. that is my point. the term whipping conjures images of domination and makes it sound as if she were tortured into learning the moves.
No, no, no it doesn't. I have never heard or seen anyone make that complaint. It is a strong word - yes - but it doesn't conjure any soft of images for anyone who is sane. What the hell...
So what about the phrase "He really took a beating" to describe someone who lost a game of chess in a miserable way? Also not acceptable? Don't be silly.

She was apparently forced to study chess for up to 12 hours on some days, 8-10 on most, to prepare for her role. Director Scott Frank commented on the matter, saying: "We wanted her to look like she is truly living and breathing as a real chess player, to have the skill and fluidity that elite level players have when moving the pieces around, and to be able to play long scenes without having to memorize the movements beforehand." Anya was apparently in a "miserable and depressed state" by the time filming began, all for something that "could've easily been faked with simple editing." Here is the interview with the director:
