Too many draws

Back to the question: If you don't like the way the top 10 players in the world play their games, why not watch the games of the players ranked 11-5000 instead? Or rapid chess?

I enjoy watching them, that is not the problem. The problem is that too many draws in major events is not appealing to sponsors and the general audience.

Is that what the general audience told you? :-)

The only people that i know of that found the world championship "boring" were the online speed chess players.  The people that i know IRL, and personally, all thought it was a very good, and well fought match.

Honestly...If you thought the match was "boring", you don't understand chess, or have the patience for it.

As I wrote, I am talking about the "general audience".

Since i have no idea who the "general audience" is, i dont know who you are referring to.  As i already posted.  The people i know IRL, and know personally all enjoyed the match.  The ONLY people i have seen complain are the online speed chess players.

Hm. IMBacon has "No idea who "the general audience" is.  Ok. I am thinking about people who know a little bit about chess (they know the moves, they have played a few games with friends, they know there are tournaments and a word championship). These people might become more interested in chess if they find out that top level chess consist of exciting games that often ends in triumph for one player and defeat for the other. Winners are admired, but at the end of a drawn games there is noe winner, og many people find this boring.

My view is that in major events should the time control should be shortened (to, say, 150 min for each player), and one should follow Dvoretsky´s idea about draws (no agreed draws; draws only after stalemate, not enough material to mate, and the 50 move rule). Yes, this will lower the quality of the games, but it will make the games more exciting for a general audience. Those who are most interested in the quality of the games can follow correspondence chess or the games here on chess.com with long time controls.

They don't play chess, so don't think about them.

Here is something for the general audience that thinks chess needs to be more exciting:

The EXTREME chess championship. Maybe we could combine this with Emu's idea of hiring a clown?

Perhaps it is time for us to give a respect to the tenacious effort of player in defending their lost against machine.
