I've been using the chess tactics server as it is free.. though I have decided to upgrade my account here.
3 hours? I assume that your online chess playing is not going to count against your study time, so here is a 3 hour per day plan:
One hour (preferable split up into 2-3 blocks) doing tactics.
One hour playing over annotated master games (with a board!).
1/2 hour doing Silmans Endgame course.
1/2 hour working on your opening repertoir and/or playing quickly through master games on a computer database.
(Where do I send the bill?)
There are multiple ways to split up your time, but I recomment "Personal chess trainer" for maybe one hour a day. Don't play chess the whole day, because your brain needs time to work on your subconscious to digest what you have learned. Use the chess mentor here to bone up on various parts of the game. Depending on your strength, you should study endings more or less. Each day watch a video on this site or on ICC (ICC has more). Study one or two openings in depth using books - videos are good for reviewing openings, but without printed variations you may tend to forget details just as fast as you learn them.
Playing on a few tournaments here can take up a large part of your day...
I finally want to get better at this game i enjoy so much. If you could dedicate 3-4 hours a day to study. How would you go about it?
would you play games non-stop, sit on chess tactics trainer the whole time, or just read?
