”strange that there is no Kasparov and Carlsen”
”Carlsen can't win in WC matches and Kasparov was great, but derivative”
Well, if Schlechter and Bronstein are on the list, and they never won a WC match, while Capa, Fischer and Tal on the list won one each, then Carlsen doesn’t look too bad after already winning four...

But at least Schlechter and Bronstein won games in a WC match. Carlsen only seems to draw games.
Besides, my chess knowledge pretty much stops at 1913. :-)
”Schlechter and Bronstein won games in a WC match. Carlsen only seems to draw games”
Schlechter won one game in a WC match he was invited to without qualification, Carlsen has won seven this far, after winning the qualification. Carlsen has also been a fairly clear #1 for a decade, while Schlechter was pretty far from such a position. When ranking Carlsen the result gets a bit more fair if one looks at all events he played rather than pick the match where he did worst (and still won...).

Carlsen has won seven this far, after winning the qualification.
Actually, if I remember, Carlsen won that qualification on a tie-break over Kramnik, when both managed to lose in the final round.
Which I am nit-piking, I know. I just would have felt more comfortable, if there had been a play-off between the two.
”I just would have felt more comfortable, if there had been a play-off between the two”
Kramnik will have to settle with being given title matches both in 2000 and 2008 without qualifying for them :-)
On the subject of Carlsen not doing well enough in title matches, he has this far played 45 games in title matches and scored 7 wins and 2 losses, i.e. +5. That’s actually better than the all other World Champions after 45 such games the last 90 years. When Kasparov had played 45 title match games he had one win and five losses :-) Karpov was the one with the best score after Carlsen, with 10-7 in wins after 45 title match games, but then all those games were against the 20 years older Korchnoi and he never had to play the previous Champion.
Alekhine does beat the +5 score, but not by much. He was +6 after 45 title match games. But then he was down to +5 after 48 games, so if Carlsen has at least an even score after a few games of his next title match, one will have to go back to Lasker in the 1890s to find a World Champion with a better plus score after the same amount of games.
.... Giri plays stronger moves than Steinitz, but Steinitz was greater since he was the best player in the world for decades and won four title matches.
Did Steinitz face a chess world comparable to that faced by Giri?
It's obviously much tougher competition nowadays, but it's still a greater achievement to win every match for 32 years, four title matches, score +7-0=0 in a match against then #2 Blackburne (Chessmetrics), than to be ranked around #10 in the world today. "This little man taught us all to play chess", was said about Steinitz. I don't think Giri belongs in the same group of players as Steinitz.
By that logic paul morphy will be the strongest of all times since he was WAY ahead of his time.. WAY ahead .. and he was the best player by a long, long mile
