Tournament Chess Boards

I am not very familiar with tournament play.  When I watch games on YouTube they always have the light and dark brown board and pieces.  They look wooden, but I noticed there is a at least one cable that is plugged in to the board.

Is the plug because for a clock or something?  Or does it actually track the moves for a cpu in real time for annotation purposes?

Top tournaments all use DGT equipment because it sends a signal to the clock and then to a computer.  See if I can find you a link....

At least in the current version chess.com doesn't support it so you would still have to submit your moves the regular way.
