Tournament scoring?

How does the point system in the daily tournaments work?

I just played my first tournament online and finished 5/7, but finished in fourth place, when either one or two, I think one, finished with the same score, but he finished in third place and I finished in fourth. I think i had 14 points and he ended up with 16, but I'm not sure how the entire system works.

I just merriam webster'ed the definition of stud, and that's not quite what I was meaning. I was meaning to say, your the man, of the hour. But, anyways thanks for the help.
