trading pieces

first let me say I am a novice at chess but eager to learn. Why trade off pieces so fast the tt seems to want to do it a lot. Is there good reason? I hate to give up my queen

Pay close attention to the tt problems and determine what the advantage is case by case. tt never has trading 'just because' as a solution. After the exchange there will be an advantage, or there wouldn't be any point in exchanging.

With that said, there is an advantage to trading pieces for the guy who is winning. maybe he's up material or has a passed pawn or two - whatever it is. In these cases, trading is good (especially queens) because it magnifies the advantage.

example: you have 8 pieces, your opponent has 7. Your opponent has 88% of the material that you do. Losing, but not too badly. Now trade 6 pieces (even trades).. your opponent then would only have 1/2 the material you do.
