Training vs. Online Games

When preparing for a tournament it is important to prepare an opening repertoire, do puzzles, review strategic principles, and of course strengthen the endgame.

But what about playing online games? Do you feel it is helpful or a distraction? Obviously, most of us have limited time to prepare, so we must be purposeful and focused.

Does it depend on the time format and frequency?

What if a coach told you not play any games until the tournament, would you be able to stop?

I am curious to hear if people believe playing online games/reviewing said games should play a roll in one's tournament preparation.
