Yeah, 1.Nf3 and then don't play d4 for a long time (if at all) has been annoying to me when I'm black, and I've used it a few times as white.
I've never played 1.d4 though so when I get into some kind of Catalan or KID I basically I have no idea what I'm doing 
How many transpostional tricks to kick your opponent out of his favorite opening do you know?
Something like 1.Nf3 avoids Grünfeld, Albin, Benko, Budapest...
