I couldn't find the reference picture, but I regularly play tri dimensional chess.
I found a set of rules, written by a fighter pilot, to help teach three dimensional fighter tactics and it's a really great game.
Gettinghold of a decent board is hard though, as the current best selling comercially available board is so wonky, it makes playing difficult.
