Chess will never be solved because nobody will ever figure out why the peeps play such a dicky game.

Is not a draw also a solution?  Neither a win, nor a loss, but certainly a resolution.  In some cases, without a rule to cover it the game would never end, so in honor of "PI" day, may I suggest that man insists on a resolution or outcome and interupts the game by "rule" much the same as he rounds off the answer to 22 divided by 7.

I solved chess and I put this info in my safe deposit box, but I lost the key.  Damn wine all to h*ll.

http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Solving_chess http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-move_advantage_in_chess I believe to to answer this question, aside from the ones where a mate is made because of an avoidable error, every possible game would have to be analysed by some hefty super computer. I say this because there could be a massive amount of sacrifices in the "perfect game". With todays technology we can not say what percentage of possible games are pointless, throwaway games but if I had to guess I'd say it was about 99%. Chess will always be playable but the short answer is... yes, one day! But is it a draw like naughts and crosses? Or does white have to win?

If in ten years it is solved it is falsely true, otherwise if it is not solved it is truely false.

A perfect football match is a 0-0 draw.

Exciting stuff!

The term "chess will never be solved" is ambigous. What does it mean?

If the question is "is chess a draw with perfect play on both sides?" the answer is "yes".

Couldn't have said it better myself.

You are an idiot. Both question have the same meaning and nobody knows whether it will be a draw with perfect play.

Most people or chess players believe the two statements have different meanings.  "solved" means analyzed to a draw with ALL possible variations such as has been done in chess positions with only a few pieces.

Is chess a draw with best possible moves? Means is chess a draw regardless if a chess computer ever solves chess by analyzing all variations.

The answer to the 2nd question is "yes"

The answer to can chess ever be "solved" is "probably not."

Akatsuki64

Chess will be solved when I have finished my super quantum computer.

schookin   Virtually all the strong players disagree with you.  More than 99.8% of the grandmasters disagree with you.  I also disagree with you.

I know chess is a draw with best play for both sides.

MBClevenger

Ponz111 How do you "know" it's a draw with perfect play for both sides? Can you prove it? No? Then you don't "know."

adumbrate

False, because when it is solved, we will edit one rule and it will take a very long time before it gets solved again.

adumbrate

Plus it will not be solved during my time anyways

All the evidence tells me chess is a draw with best play for both sides.

my  60 plus years of playing also tells me this.

Do you really think 99.8% of the grandmasters are wrong and you are right?

As players progress in chess skill, they know more and more that chess is a draw with best play for both sides.

what is "solved"? Chess isn't a crossword... and no  I've not read ther thread start either... maybe I really should check it out, but meantime...

Solved as in the puzzle has perfect solution.

It doesn't matter to chess players if the game is ever solved because there will never be a person capable of memorizing all of the variations well enough to make use of the solutions.. It would be like Ford Prefect knowing that the answer to the ultimately important and question is 42, but that the question itself is unknowable :oP
