True sign of a genius

Is when you don't care much and/or exert much energy in winning positions.

Carlsen has showed it against Nakumara in Tal Memorial 2013 and all his career. He shows no excitment and even looks bored sometimes when he is completely winning.

When almost every other GM shows real enthusiam to find the most killer combination. They all start eyeballing their openent.

Magnus spends most of his energy on trying to win equal or save worse postions. The only time he ever gets excited is after a long grueling game he finds a tactical game changing combination, like against Karjakin in Norway Chess 2013 (which IMO was the best game played this year for it's quality, briliance and tournament situation).

Do you agree with this?

In winning positions?

I think true genius lies in the ability to stay calm under incredible pressure when losing and finding a way out of it to win the game.

Sounds to me like he is just bored with the game and should probably go on to play Rugby or something.

MrDamonSmith

Don't quote me but.........

He might be one who "retires" when he wins the world championship. It could happen. He might play a few years and quit. He'll have enough $ at 25. He already makes 1.5 per year . He won't need to play chess.

I don't know about you Phylar, but I also get bored when I am faced with a problem that is too trivial for my skill level whatever it is.

Sure it is great to win the toughest games ever, but in my opinion the aspect people overlook is how a player behaves when they are completely winning.

We are talking about the best chess players in the world here, and to take it casual when winning is something really amazing. Other players would give 100% here because it is not easy to win.

But what would he do after chess? He has nothing else. Chess is pretty much his life. He will play for a long time for sure.

Saw this recently:

Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% people cheapening the meaning of the word genius.

MrDamonSmith

I like the last quote. I think it normally ends 99% persperation. But that ones right.

What will he do?? He'll have money. He'll invest. Period. He'll survive.

MrDamonSmith

With 10 mil he'll get by on half a mil per year. He'll be ok.

theprodigy01

Genius is sheer brilliance.

But that is not genius as genius can be defined on many levels.

Thus I prefer to think of a genius who can hold a clear head in the most difficult of positions and who holds a love for the game throughout his or her whole life. A person who works harder and harder and eventually becomes the best through sheer determination. That sir, is genius.

Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

(Amos Dolbear , later wrongly assigned to Einstein by Matthew Kelly and now a 'famous' Einstein facebook quote)

*facepalm*

When unable to formulate a proper counter-argument one must always go back to the classic "both" formula.

You are right, but holy crap is that cliche.

If one does not want formulate a counter argument and one couldn't really care less about the argument in the first place but one wants to point out that there as as many ways to be a genius as there are people ,as the posts indicate, then one is inclined to post above quote but one might also want to point out that it was not Einstein who said it. One.

If you didn't care about the argument in the first place and yet still feel inclined to voice your opinion in regards to said argument isn't that called conceited? Your move.

Rational_Optimist

this is his style.ppl didnt like petrosian or karpov style but they loved chess and was worthy champions.you cant judge his feelings based on his style and one game against nakamura.yeah for example nakamura is a brilliant and tactical player and carlsen has a 7-0 score against him.

1st Story.

Two men were lost in a forest. They didn't have guns. Then they saw a hungly lion 300 ft away. One of them run immediately. The other tied his shoes. The one who run shouted :"Come on. Run. Ther is a hungry lion. What do you do?"

The other replied: "I am tying my shoes."

"Why? Run"

"Well, I don't have to run faster than the lion. That I can't do. What I can do is to run faster than you!"

Chinese proverbs:

"There is higher mountain than the highest mountain. There is sky above the highest sky"

bean_Fischer

Moral of the stories. To be the best, you don't have to be the best.

To be a champion, you don't have to have to have the highest IQ.

What you can do is to out beat your opponents in chess.

then that highest mountain/sky should be 2nd highest instead.

What the proverb says is: If you come to know the highest mountain, Then you can always find a higher mountain.

If you come to know the highest sky, then you can always find a higher sky.

I firmly disagree. To be the best u have to be the best.

If you are the best, then you are also the worst.
