True Values Test

Test! We all know knights are worth 3 but when it comes to AI's what is the true value of bishops? Hint it's Higher than 3 and lower than 3.5 like some masters think it is also what is the true value of a rook for an AI? surprisingly its less than 5 but Chessmaster insists bishops are 3 and rooks are 5 "cough" what a joke! Angel wins 80% of games and draws the other 20% when facing Chessmaster and it takes me to figure the numbers out -.-

Arctor

A rook is better than a knight or a bishop.....except when it's not

Stop thinking in terms of numbers, it doesn't help. Chess is not mathematics

Centi pawns are a neat way of playing chess but the software i deal with and my lack of knowledge on the high number values makes it nearly impossible to work with it but when i make AI's i have the initial spot to put any piece from 0.0 to 20.0 so roughly 200 points i can work with but what i deal with is on a different level then a centi pawn program now Angel may get something like +0.32/-2.01 and Chessmaster in the same situation may get +0.26/-1.22 its only because the calculations are different from the 2 but in reality numbers mean very little to me when put like this because i use different numbers and i adjust playlines etc. my program win the better half of the games and ties the rest but in the making of the programs i do have to say Angel's decendants didn't do so well!

It's mathematics to a "computer AI" trust me :)

Another new 1200 player who's got it all figured out.  Cool

Many people have come up with different value rating schemes for pieces over the centuries.  Truth is a matter of opinion on this subject.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_piece_relative_value

If you have it all figured out like you say you do then lets go on another chess site and test our AI's out lol is yours topnotch or is it not so topnotch? because my serch depth is not 14 like chessmaster and playlines are never 100 over 100 they actually are designed to work with the strongest lines of play as well as enhance the play when those lines are no longer in book openings and because the program rarely trades an opponents knight for its own bishop and its adjusted Rook value to add a very unique twist on how effective the rook actually plays the game makes Angel a puzzle/monster for other AI's/People to figure out and trust me the games you play with it goes directly into its Database and from there it adjust its play the next time it faces you whether it wins or loses it always records and saves!

ButWhereIsTheHorse

the ratings of chess pieces starts at the usual ones but as the game progresses the worth of the pieces dramatically changes as the pieces reach a certain position.

W12ard

These two rooks might have counted both 5 points at the beginning of the game but...as windows96 pointed out their value can increase or decrease as the game progress.....

Wow.  All that blather, and you were wrong within your first few words.  Show me where I said I have it all figured out.

ButWhereIsTheHorse

I think the basic worth of the pieces is just the avarage worth out of all billion games played in the world

Arctor

How much is a pawn worth?

ButWhereIsTheHorse

a pawn is usually worth around 1 points, however who doesn't remember an annoying pawn, which completely cracks our position, those can be around 2 to 3 points.

Is that a center pawn? a rook pawn? bishop pawn? knight pawn?

What rank is it on?

Is it doubled? tripled?! backward? isolated? passed? connected passer? Laughing

Arctor

Here's what I use:

Queen > Rook > Bishop/Knight > Pawn

......................except when it's not

I find in this day and age "Stockfish" is stronger than Chessmaster anyday as long as you tweak it properly of course!
