Trying to explain the lack of female interest in chess

Chess is a game of mental warfare waged on the 64 black and white squares. It is a contest to prove your strategical and tactical superiority over the opponent. It is governed by the rules of ruthless logic and sheer complexity.

Males naturally gravitate towards activities involving complex logic and the added attraction of chess is that it can fuel the competitive drive and provide a positive way to channel aggression.

Whereas many women might ask "why do men waste their time on a silly board game?", most men tend to avoid the question entirely and instead are instinctively focused on challenging and crushing the person sitting on the other side of table in a grueling battle of determination and wits.

I know lots of women who like to play chess. Sounds like you are just an annoying chess player who thinks you are annoying because you are a man.

Stay tuned. He's going to reach out to you for names and numbers

OP has been making borderline creepy comments on women since he came here.  Take a good look through his "friends" list.  Notice anything?

A lot of chess players need to get over themselves lol, smh….

while I can't say I agree with the OP, the game is very much uncompromising, especially in competitive OTB tournaments. I just got back from a super-large tournament over thanksgiving break that lasted from wednesday to sunday, and being the fifth from last seed, there were no easy games.

But there was a heck of a lot of learning opportunities.

And an equal number of regrets! lol

Besides the typical men pretending to be girls?

That's just incidental irony, and although amusing, is not really the point.

That's awesome happy.png

I haven't been to a big tournament in years... and being one of the lowest rated players, you'll have a lot of memories. Maybe some of them will be unpleasant and you were exhausted in some games, but yeah, I miss that... I should go to a tournament again...

Yeah. In the seventh round I offered an early draw because I just didn't want to play anymore. I was making moves almost instantly in a 90+30 game... then I took round 8 and 9 off. I need to work on my stamina, I run out of gas fast.

This was the worst way to phrase:
“Hey guys I think men play chess more”

And that’s annoying how you only focused on that as if that was a problem 🤦🏾‍♂️

I realize the author of whatever the OP copy-pasted wasn't being completely serious, but... I guess it annoys me that so many people don't realize how unserious it is so here we go...

Which is it? A psychological battle or a logic puzzle?

brianchesscake wrote:

Sure I'm getting nit picky, but chess isn't a test of intelligence or creativity or anything. So winning doesn't "prove" superiority in any sense. It doesn't even "prove" superiority in chess (just that one game).

brianchesscake wrote:

This is just false. Most humans (males included) dislike logic. You could say that those who gravitate towards activities involving logic tend to be male though... which is what you were probably trying to say... but even then someone will argue nature (gender) vs nurture (culture).

brianchesscake wrote:

Gender aside, I've never heard anyone ask this. Never once. Also it's a silly phrasing, as if all men are chess players, or all chess players are men. A normal phrasing would be "why do some people" not "why do men."

brianchesscake wrote:

And in any case, "avoiding" is a poor characterization. Practically no one is so philosophical about their hobbies that they first seek a greater meaning. No one asks "what is the purpose of enjoying music" they just enjoy it.

So for example, it could be rewritten as:

Chess is a battle of strategy and tactics waged on 64 squares. The great majority of chess players are male, and this may be because, while it is a grueling game, it provides a positive outlet for someone's competitive drive. Since women are not as competitive, they're less likely to be interested.
