Turn Based -vs- Live Chess

Which do you prefer and why?

By the way, while we are on the subject, is it just me, or (assuming a similar rating) are people on Live Chess comparably more difficult to beat than those who play Turn Based chess?

Exhuming the body of Fischer pretty much illustrates the advantage of live chess. Turn based chess seems fair considering the alternative, not taking turns.

Different objectives for each so, it's a draw. It would seem to me there's a continuum...all leading to playing face to face against an opponent with a pulse (someone else's phrase). Turn based would most clearly be an opportunity for study.

Sorry, I'm not quite 'with it' as far as the last post goes. It's a bit too cryptic for me... Can you elaborate?

Just to be clear, I'm asking people to discuss which form of chess on this site they prefer, and why there is an increase in difficulty between beating people on turn based chess, compared to people with similar ratings on live based chess.

I like live chess

I like live chess just because I don't play regularly so I just pop in, play a game and get on with my life. Simple as that.

Well it certainly seems like there is significant inflation in rating points in turn based chess, vs. live chess. You don't see anyone with a live rating past 2500 in live chess, whereas you can see some people ocassionally get around 3000 in turn based (of course this quite rare, but it does happen). Live chess, especially long live, seems to be a good indicator your otb skills, as my live rating is right on par with my USCF rating. Both are around 1215.

So I enjoy both of them, but they are very different animals indeed.

I'm just a bit perplexed. My otb rating is BCF 100-120, but it seems that around 1200-1500 on turn-based... Well, it was easier than I was expecting, that's all.

I think it is natural for people to play better in Online Chess since there is a lot of time to think about the position, use Game Explorer, Analysis Board, etc.  If everyone did so, one would expect the ratings to be approximately equal, but I suspect that some people who play Online Chess don't take advantage of the extra time and resources to improve the quality of their play.  Therefore, those that do take advantage can perform comparatively better than in their live games.

I prefer Live Chess, but I actually play more Online Chess because it is convenient, and I don't feel as nervous about making a mistake.

It is a dialect known as humor which eludes the understanding of a surprising number of people.
