I believe anyone who submits a challenge where both of your rating specifications overlap is placed in a pool and then one is chosen randomly. I could be wrong though.

My online opponents are evenly spread over my stated range. If they were supposed to be closest to me, bearing in mind the large number of people to choose from, they would be from a noticeably narrower range.

Yes, i read that too, i wasn't sure whether that just applied to live games.
Will chess.com automatically match me with a opponent closest to my rating or just a random person within my max- min settings?
I only need to know this infomation for online turn based chess.
