1) To play at least 20 fide rated games

2) To have at least one rating performance of at least 2050 (I have already made a 1900+ performance)

3) To study carefully the chess books that I already own (I usually just try to follow the lines in my head, instead of using a chess set).

Are your resolutions attainable? Realistic?

The first one: Just get into tournaments or a league team.

The second one: I don't know what a performance is? Good luck on that.

The third one: Most people make the mistake and try using their head only, but that is not the best method. Try using a actual chess board and pieces. Play the book no matter how easy the example is. That the way to get the best from the material.

Best of luck to you.

Hi High Denver! Smile

1) I just registered with a team 2 weeks ago, I´m "reserve" in the national league, but I´ll play for sure in the city league. That was the better way, since I only have to pay my annual membership to the club and then I don´t have to pay to enter the tournaments.

2) A rating performance is when you play in a tourmant and "perform" according to some rating. For example, if in the tournament everybody is 1937 (or the rating average), and I drew with everybody, my rating performance would be 1937, since that would be the expected score for a 1937.

3) I can lie to myself saying that I´m try to develop my "visualization skills", but it´s just that I´m being lazy not using a chessboard.

By the way, I never founded a comfortable way to read a book an have a chess set, do you do that in desk? how do you prevent the book from closing? Maybe one would need one of those things to put the music scores.

Hi Socialista!

I sure looks like your resolutions are attainable for you. I wish I was closer to San Francisco to be able to join a league like you did.  Like at the Mechanics Institute,

Thanks for explaining performance.

I used to prop up my book using the large Heins 57 bottle under the book at restaurants. One day I was at Denny's reading a book, then my meal came as I ate the page of the chess book kept turning. So I took the pie display and laid down and I put the book on it. It held it at a readable angle. I put a salt shaker next to the page to keep it from turning while I read and ate.

Rick the manager came over and said, "I see you are using the holder for the pie display for your book. Would you like to take one or several with you? We are getting rid of them on Friday."

I took two and I have one in the car and one at home on the kitchen table. Of course I didn't get the pie advertisements. The music holder doesn't work well I have one.

There is a store here called "Tap Plastic" they make book holder of clear platic with a slot to put a book and the clear plastic holds it open to read.

Hi Seadog:  In Ohio?

I used to go to Troy, Ohio when I worked for HOBART Corp. Too flat for me and COLD when I went, minus 10 degrees. I love California weather.

I checked your profile. So to get past 1500 better not lose any games and it is attaniable for you.

Useles things are many. You are going to hunt and peck as to what is useless. That seems like it is easy to do.

Thanks for reading and posting. Good luck.

To OP; http://www.tarladalal.com/ is a great site for vegetarian cooking.

I didn't forget you. I went to that url but it is too deep for me.

What I want is some single cooking dishes that people like and eat themselves. Not just a bunch of them. I am sure there are devout vegans amongst the 6 millon members.

Thanks for your suggestion.

But Denver, cooking for 1 person is never convenient. It costs more than just going to the restaurant after all the things that you will have to throw to the trash bin. In addition to the lost of time.

@ SOCIALISTA:

When I make a vegetarian meal, I make enough for three people. I eat one meal and freeze the other two. I find that vegetable meals don't have very much waste.

RichColorado

Ooops. I missed my # one resolution several times. I didn't anylize it before making the move. I place the move in the conditional feature and chess.com made the move for me immediatelly.

I will have to strive, and not use the conditional feature.

SocialPanda

But if you made conditionals it's supposed that you analized the conditional move. You didn't break anything.

About my resolutions, I studied one chapter of a book with a board, it took me like 2 hours.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went there but since I gave up cheese I could not use them. I found a cook book, "Forks over Knives" I am starting it slowly.

That is what I needed support. I did do that. I analized it before I submitted the move in the conditional feature. I guess that counts.

And you playing out the book is a great way to embed the lessons into your brain.

Ooops . . . I broke resolution # 2 and added two games. Team Colorado, One of my groups sent out a request for several players in a team match, so I reponded and joined the match.

I completely forgot about # 2. I will do better from now on.

I win some and lose some and my rating or my learning seems stagnant. I am stuck between 1575 and 1600. My goals seem too far up.

I will add one more resolution:

4) I won't buy any chess book during 2014 (I have more than enough for all my life).

Maybe you have enough for this year, but not for your life.

Yes, that could be true. But I will have to study very fast.

How many games do you have know? Are the positions too complex?

If you have simple games, it wouldn't be that bad to add a game if it's not going to affect your performance.

I only have eleven and two vote team match games. The team match games aren't a problem.

It seems that the higher my rating gets the games aren't simple anymore because they don't finish before 40 moves. When I was lower I would play opennings with traps and opponents would fall into them and the games would end quickly.

They progress into a long endgame. I don't mind simple single pawn and king endings. Now they end up with Bishops of different colors and pawn, kight vs bishop and both have pawns and they they end up LONG and tedious.

Mostly games are even for a long time now and I can't sacrifice a lower piece like I used to and still win. I can't give a pawn or two away because I can't seem to recover them and that let's my opponent win.

Hey, writing what my problems are, is helping me to anylize my style of play and what I have to change.

Thanks for the questions you posed to me. It seems that I have to have more patience, time and not give even a pawn or anything away.  Let's see if this change will help me.

SocialPanda

Yes, if we just stop giving pieces away for free, we could gain some points Smile

Just take your time, nobody is in a hurry (and if they are in a hurry they shouldn't play long time controls...).

Another topic, I just discovered that I like to print games from a defined player or a defined opening (20-40 games) and then write questions about the moves that I don't understand in every game.

I don't really know what I'm going to do with the questions, but I like to read just the games and reproduce them without any annotations, so I can think for myself at first.

RichColorado

Socialista: That exercise of the games sounds interesting. I did something similar and on each move I put why I made it. It was an exercise on how I think and I posted them on Chess.com

I really enjoyed making them. It took quite

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-showcase/what-i-think-will-be-the-response-many-time-wont-happen

and a different kind i made and posted.

I would like to see your work. Maybe you should post it and you would get feed back on it.
RichColorado

Today I got changes on my rating.

Patience during a game helped me to win it.

I asked someone for a draw and they accepted so I lost 3 rating points.

I was at 1583  got the draw.

Lost three went to 1580. Minus 3.

Got a win and went to 1592  Plus 12 .

SocialPanda

Mr. High, I read your first link, but the second one says: "this post has been deleted".

Do you want that I comment on your sicilian game or maybe do you prefer if I look at one your recent games? (since you know probably learned many more things since that game).
