uh.. What is chess actually?

After that incoherent metaphor about the hammer, you really should just walk away.

Yea, chess seems kind of science-like. But if all it takes for something to be a science is for it to be something you can optimize and make small tweaks in efficiency to, then what’s not a science? Every video game is a science then. Planning my day is a science. Carpentry is a science. Air traffic control is a science.

Just because elements of the scientific method can be used to optimize something doesn’t seem like a good enough reason to call that thing a science.

Then what is a science to you? Because many scientific fields are all about making small optimizations when there are no big discoveries to be made.

It's actually a board game. So you could do that same diagram thing overlapping board game, obsession, and hobby. That small area in the middle you could call chess.

Well, let’s look at some fields we agree are sciences: chemistry and physics… They’re both umbrella disciplines with countless applications. The science of chemistry gives you a clear path forward in making pharmaceuticals, explosives, adhesives, gasses etc. The science of physics gives you a clear path forward in designing gears, motors, rockets, etc…

If chess is a science, then what are some things the “science” of chess provides a clear path forward in?

The science that governs chess is logic. And chess is just one of the applications under the science of logic. Chess itself is not a science because it has no broader application.
xFallesafe
And logic is so universal and indispensable that it precedes all science. I’m not sure it’s even right to call logic a science. Chess is just a dead-end application of logic.

Makes sense.

dont know if its science but it's information heavy and there are some facts ... and people some people even make a living from teaching it...

If you watch two puppies wrestling and rolling around, or two grown dogs playing tug of war with a stick......well, chess is the human version of those.

It's a board game, yes. But more than that, it is a competitive activity that gives us the opportunity to practice and apply many life skills in a "safe" environment, where there's not much at stake. It will bring out the best and the worst in you, and if you are wise, I believe you will learn from both and try to make your best even better and your worst....not quite as bad.

I don't believe it's science or art, but others might and I think it's a matter of opinion, or definition. If you find beauty in it, who am I to say it's not art? The board and pieces qualify as works of art, I'd say, but the game.... I don't think so.

Chess is WAR...although someone once made a good point about chess being a type of *puzzle*...🤔

I'm guessing you haven't experienced real war.

Ever notice that the people that get all geeked about war are those that never served or fought.

Yes, I sure have. And I'm pretty sure chess is nothing like war.

Well im sure we have some that would claim PTSD after losing a game

Sad....but true. But maybe they'll feel better when they get their participation trophy.

"Computers" do art nowadays. But i still don't think it's art. I am sure it's not science. It is a sport, although some may disagree.

And YOU have, Ancient One?? I'd hardly call being a FLYBOY dropping bombs on defenseless Vietnamese people "experiencing war"...maybe your Groundpounder compadres actually in the jungle, getting sniped at by g ooks or tripping landmines/falling down spiked pit traps, etc., WERE THE ONES ACTUALLY EXPERIENCING WAR!! Or, since the Vietnam War was more of a low-intensity CONFLICT, how about the REAL WAR of your predecessors, the generation who fought in WWII??!! Now THAT was  a WAR! Which means nobody since then--including YOU and your SELF-PITYING GENERATION OF BABY BOOMERS--has experienced real war...so yeah, I'm glad you changed your original profile picture showcasing "you in 1970"...WHO CARES ABOUT PRETENTIOUS FLYBOYS???!!!

As for YOU, @NervesofButter, a.k.a., BALLSOFBUTTER, in reference to your YessMan Post #45, the only person apt to start soiling himself--war or peace--is boomers like YOU!!

lemaudit1, I read your post a couple times and when I filtered out the sarcasm and hysteria, I discovered you actually had some points. You are correct in that my flying airplanes thousands of feet above earth is a lot different from being shot at on the ground. And no,  I didn't actually experience war and I'm sorry if I gave anyone the impression that I did. I did serve 5+ years, but no combat. I was reacting to someone else's comment equating chess to war, and out of respect for those who HAVE experienced war for real, I made my comment. I think comparing anything else to war is, in fact, disrespectful to those who have actually fought, especially those who fought in the wars that preceded me.

I changed my picture because I decided that the "flyboy" was no longer me. I am as represented in the new picture....a husband (and father, grandfather, etc), an active hiker, and an older man doing my best to be a decent Christian.

I'm not sure exactly how I offended you, but I regret that I did, and if you'd like to chat further about it in a respectful, civilized way, I'd be happy to....here or private message.

its just a game which psychologically puts 2 people like bloody soldiers wanting to murder each other during a war, thats just how i view the game especially at tournaments winning is a must
