Hi All,

can you recommend a book that illustrates:

- common tactical themes in open games

- common strategies and ideas in open games

- possibly contains well annotated games

- doesn't delve to much into variations because i don't need that kind of book

I consider myself to be an advanced beginner, so please point me to titles i can benefit from at my level.

Cheers

For tactical themes, I'd recommend the Chess Tactics book by John Bain and followed by Hertan's Power Chess for Kids.

There are tons of tactics books out there ... but the Bain book is the most "levelled" of the lot with motifs and positions that any decent player MUST know before tackling harder problems.

For strategy/positional ideas in both OPEN and CLOSED games with great annotations, here are 4 very good books for you at the level you state are (in the recommended reading order)

- Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur (Euwe)

- Logical Chess (Chernev)

- Most Instructive Games of Chess (Chernev)

- Best lessons of a Chess Coach (Weeramantry)
