unexpected abandonment

So I was playing a game and the guy/girl had me on the ropes but I had a way out no matter how tenuous. Anyway I guess the player was at a loss at what to do as he offered me a draw 4 times. I wasn’t having any of that so I refused each time. Then out of nowhere it said I lost the game due to abandonment! I didn’t abandon the game at all. Is there something I’m missing here?

If it's something like blitz, there's a max time duration for each move, else game is abandoned (this is even after the first few moves). Or they just disconnected, but you usually get a notification for that.
