Unfair matchmaking system

"Dear Chess.com and community,

I was just 3 Rapid Elo away from reaching 900, but whenever I try to rank up, WITHOUT FAIL, the game review estimates my opponent’s performance at a 1600-1650 rating level. You can check my match history to see how unlucky I am; just one game away from 900, yet I always meet people with 90% accuracy, and the rating engine estimates that my opponent played like someone with double their actual Elo.

Please explain why this happens. I feel victimized by an unfair matchmaking system. Thank you, Chess.com,

because of your matchmaking system, I now feel depressed over this STUPID Elo number on the screen. I mean, I don't mind losing as long as the opponent is evenly matched, but this has happened 3 times already. ALWAYS, WHENEVER I AM 1 GAME AWAY, I GET MATCHED WITH AN OPPONENT WHO, ACCORDING TO THE ENGINE REVIEW, PLAYS LIKE THEY HAVE 2X THEIR ELO. THANKS FOR THE TORMENT, I AM CURRENTLY UNSTABLE."

According to your rapid diagram you have approached 900 yesterday for the first time over 4 years, you have won almost 2/3 of your games within the last 7 days, there is capacity to get above 900, stop paying that much attention to the Game Rating, it is useful for screenshots rather than for skill measurement

If your chess.com rating makes you depressed and unstable, then the match making algorithm should be the least of your concerns. Please talk to your family and maybe your GP about it. I do not know your age, but if you are a minor, that's what you definitely should do.

If you are an adult, then maybe you are capable enough to realize (on your own) that your game scores should not influence your self-worth. If not, the above advice still applies.

As for match making of chess.com I highly doubt it is designed to keep people from increasing their rating.

Thanks, I’ll take that as a compliment, but that’s not the issue I’m raising.

The main point is that there is an interesting pattern: every time I am about to reach a 900 rating, I invariably get matched with an opponent whose quality of play far exceeds mine, ensuring a loss and this is validated by the game review engine.

I don't mind losing. But a pattern that seems deliberate and has already repeated 3 times is worth questioning, it feels like it’s intentional or there is a specific error in the matchmaking.

Three times is a miniscule sample size. It does not mean anything. Three times your opponents played very well for your level? There's nothing abnormal about it. If it was like 30 times in a row, then we could start discussing it. Three times is nothing.

Oh, really? I thought I was just upset because of this losing streak. I hope it's not a system error, but if it is, please fix the matchmaking system, Chesscom. 1600 vs 890 in random online match was crazy

You were not paired against a 1600 player. You were paired against someone who had rating similar to yours but happened to play a very good game for his/her level, which chess.com estimated as 1600. This happens fairly often. It is not crazy.

chess.com matchmaking is so much better than lichess its not even funny. When you get above 2150 on lichess 75% of your matches will be with people below 2100, you get 4 elo for a win and 8-9 for a loss. I had a black 8 times in a row the other day on there. The 2200 rating grind on there is really something else.

The matchmaking system doesn’t work on those metrics. It’s based on ratings and compatible rating ranges.
