Unfair Tournament?

I went to a chess tournament that had 5 rounds. Each round, the time control is 30 minutes each.
At round 3, I'm at 3 wins and zero losses. 4th round, I decide to draw my game as black because I was confident that I could win my 30 minute game in round 5 as white.

Round 5 comes along and turns out that the organizers are being pushed out of the facility because time is almost up for renting the facility. They tell us to play 5 minute games instead (IM TERRIBLE AT QUICK TIME CONTROLS) I play and I lose, I get 2nd place in the tournament. No prize, 1st place got $150.00, what should I have done, what should have they done? Had I known that the last game was 5 minutes, i could have tied for 1st by winning the 4th game. (I drew at +0.5 evaluation)

You took the easy way out thinking you had 1st in the bag.  You got what you deserved.

It sounds like serious mismanagement on the part  of the organisers, who should have made allowance for running over. Not withstanding that, I think most entrance forms often include some sort of provision for 'executive' decisions by organisers. Assuming they couldn't get extra time at the venue, they may have in the circumstances, done the right thing.

It bad luck for you and possibly more for those organising whose reputation will be severely tarnished. It has to be said though, from what I know, that people organising events aren't money grabbers, but chess enthusiasts attempting to bring chess to people. I admire and respect most tournament organisers - but this was incompetent, yes.
