Live and learn. We're all young and stupid once, and some of us have to learn the hard way. Today, I do what I'm told.

Perpetual check is a great tool. Especially if you are behind and find a way to make the perpetual check happen. Here is a game I played a couple of monts ago. I made a blunder that cost me the exchange and my initiative against black. I saw a tactical opportunity to create a perpetual check which turned a losing game into a draw:

2 each there own I guess, But if that's the only way a person can save there self from loosing a game that's pretty bad, After all its only a Game!!! We had name for that in a pool game when the opponent would hide the pool ball so you couldn't make your shot. Dirty Pool!!! In this case Dirty Chess!!!

By this way of thinking then if a football team is ahead by lets say 10 points with a few minutes left and they keep running the ball to eat up the clock that is dirty football, after all they should pass every play to let the other team have a chance at an interception so they can get back in the game. It is not dirty the hide the cue ball or play for stalemate or use the clock to your advantage.

Once a week, my wife "has a headache".  She's practicing dirty sex. Why doesn't she get naked and run around. At least give her opponent A CHANCE of getting back in the game!!

Alright, we'll call it a draw.

It´s an unwritten rule Steve. Probably, you were not paying attention.

It's called going for the draw. It's not poor sportsmanship. A chess player with good sportsmanship would admire his opponent having found a way to turn an otherwise loss into a draw.

A turnover like that deserves a sundae ice cream treat !

+10. How did I miss this one the first time through? How do you score it? Like, if she says, "I'm flattered, but my boyfriend..." you get the quarter point, but if she says, "The thought of you makes me dry." you get zilch?

The look on a guys face after a girl said the latter to him would be priceless.

I've enjoyed all of your responses, Some very nice, Some smart @$$!!, Even a spell check in the bunch LOL!!! Some not even worth reading. That's what nice about America freedom of speech. I still say for someone to do that to save a loss, Its pretty poor. You might as well bump the chess board and say oppsWink It would save a loss LOL!!!

.and the majority of us say "if you don't like the rules, go find another game to play"

Is "Monopoly" well respected?

(but in any case, why we have to worry if a game is respected or not, if you enjoy your hobby, just play it!)

I'm over it :-)  I just wanted to hear some feed back on this issue. I've only had it happen twice in my life, And I'm sure people have had plenty of opportunities. Lesson well learned :-)

I don't admire my opponent when they weasel their way out of a loss.  Even though it's my fault, I don't admire it :P  Usually when I do that to a person I know how I feel inside when i stiff them like that.  ;)

Are you going to try another hobby or keep playing chess and accept the rules?

Perpetual check is a perfectly legitimate way to save a draw.  It's the chess equivalent of playing keep-away to prevent the other team from scoring, which is a strategy you will see in many sports.

On the other hand, stalemate is a stupid rule.  It makes no sense to award a draw to a player whose position is so bad he can't even make a move.  A stalemate should be thought of as a "zugzwang checkmate," where a player must resign in lieu of throwing his king to the wolves.  For those who think a statemate is an inferior checkmate, well then go with the 3/4-1/4 split (although my preference would be for a .7-.3 split).  Making a stalemate worth more than a draw but less than a win would actually be an interesting idea to enrich the scoring system.

Till_98

I know someone who is so good at chess that he even wins with perpetual check.

It's a SKILL to spot out the weaknesses of the opponent notwithstanding his positional as well as the pieces advantage.

What I get from you is that if in a duel, when one of the fighter breaks his sword - the other one whines - "don't be a weasel. why don't you just stand still and let me poke you with my sword."

A smart player will keep on checking until draw or until the other fumbles. In any case, you're  not a very SOLID player if you can't get a proper checkmate without expecting the other player to "just let you win".

You've misunderstood my post and used it as a reason to sit there and tell me about what kind of person I am.  Keep your arguements about the topic, or to yourself.  Either is okay with me. :))
