unrated

Can anyone explain to me the purpose of an unrated game. What does the rule book say? Is it playing just for fun or something?

you could try out a weird opening or use it to tutor a player throughout a game

I tend to play unrated when I'm playing with a handicap (ill, time-odds, piece-odds) or when I'm experimenting (new opening, new time control). I can also answer questions about the game before we're finished. Unrated means exactly what it sounds like--your rating will not be affected in any way by the game.

I play unrated games, if I want to try out a particular strategy or opening.  If the opening does not work out for my style, then no harm done, but if it works well, then I can incoroporate it into my repetoire of strategies to use in rated games.

I use it to play players that have a rating that is many rating points over my rating.  This is a good way to play a better player and bring your best game without losing rating points.  I have also played some tournaments organized by players for fun on this website.  It's good way to allow a lower rated player to play you and sharpen his game.
