Unrequested change from Blitz to Rapid: How to return to Blitz?

Sort:

Hi,

My Account recently switched from Blitz to Rapid without explanation, and there does not seem to be any convenient method of switching back to Blitz. Can anyone help please?

Yeah, 10/0 was just switched to rapid from blitz.  Try 5/5 if you prefer slower blitz; it's close and you have an increment you can live off in time trouble.  Lot of posts from folks unhappy with the change...

10 min games are now classified as rapid. This change happened a few days ago.

You can always play 9 min games if you want to continue playing blitz. Or you can play some increment games like 5 mins with a 5 second increment per move.

In looking at your archive, you don't really play any other rapid. 10|0 is still the same game. The only difference is it takes longer now for the game to abort at the beginning of the game.

How do I select only Blitz opponents?

Matthew75Jones

The change means, for some bizarre reason that my (relatively poxy) blitz ranking has now shot up to something more respectable in rapid. The knock-on being that opponents wrongly assume that i actually know what I'm doing! I assume playing frequently for a few days (read: losing) should bring me back to earth?

If you select a 10|0 game you will only be playing rapid opponents (it previously was classified as blitz). If you'd like to still be playing blitz games, it now needs to be at a lower time control

Chess.com appears to be ignoring the substantial backlash to the change.

There is no substantial backlash. Lots of people like it, but only those who don’t complain. If they changed it back, all those who like the change would complain and you would see another “substantial backlash”.

Most people support these changes, myself included.

I am much the same, except I am not included.

Then it should be easy to link all the posts demanding 10/0 be rapid cause they dont want it to be blitz rating. The thing is you can issue a 5/5 or whatever and then watch paint dry, cause the quick parings decide it. There is a 5/5 after "more" but almost nobody does that.

If it were up to me the user would set the time and then the challenges would pop up nearest to that setting, but within that bullet/blitz/rapid range.

I prefer to play 10/0 games whether they call them rapid or blitz.  Who cares what they call it?

Funny thing with me, my old blitz rating (before they changed it to rapid) hovered around 1750 in straight on challenges with other 10/0 players but once I started playing in those 10/0 tournaments my rating dropped to around 1600.  Lol!  i mean if you lose to a couple of 1100 or 1200 players once or twice it takes a beating on your rating.  And if you beat 5 1000 players in a row your lucky to get back 3 points.  Oh well.

I accept that it makes no difference whether 10 minute games are called blitz or rapid. Just for a while my rating was garbage. Now the percentiles have returned to the stats I can see that I am still around the same level as before - it's just my rating has jumped up 50 points. I am interested as to whether my old blitz rating was correct or my new rapid rating? One of them has to be wrong!

+/- 50 is essentially the same rating. Once things settle down and RD values level off for most people, I wouldn't be surprised if your rating graph ends up falling in the same ranges over time.
